Intern Max: First Day
Author: Max Choong
Hello everyone!
My name is Max and I’m the new intern for R.AGE. In this eight weeks internship, I’ll do what I can to provide you with the best!
Yes, that includes going through emails, keeping the site updated and writing articles for your reading pleasure. (My fingers crossed in hopes that I don’t have to make coffee for the rest of the staff.)
Being my first day and all, of course I was nervous. The prospect of meeting new faces, overcoming new challenges and completing my task with quality gave me the jitter. But I am excited as well! What’s life if there’s no challenges, ey? And who won’t be excited at the opportunity to be a part of the R.AGE team?
Thankfully, my nervousness quickly dried off because of how welcoming and nice everyone is. In return, it gives me an extra boost to excel and to try my best. Albeit I was shy to ask questions at first, I eventually loosened up. Everyone is so willing to help and it really makes me feel a part of the group.
Not only that, it is fun to be here too! Everyone’s personality is colourful and vibrant, it makes R.AGE a great place to spend my internship at.
But it’s not all fun and games all the time - everyone is busy typing away on their computer to meet deadline. And I can totally see Ian (colleague sitting next to me) occupied with his article on his trip with WorldVision to India. So make sure to read that up on R.AGE tomorrow.
In the morning, I had my first breakfast hang-out session with everyone at a nearby mamak and I was told that it has the best fried chicken, and until I try it, I’m not part of the group.
But because I already ate, I had to pass on the fried meat. Everyone was chatting away because Ian had just came back from India and Sharmila recently returned from Germany for Shell Eco-Marathon (Pictures in the Album!).
I had my first editorial meeting as well. I was late because I was having my lunch nearby (talk about leaving a good impression). But I quickly grabbed a chair and got to work. We discussed on up coming stories to cover, allocation of tasks and to get ready to move the entire office to a different floor.
So everyone got out of their chairs and went for a look-see at our new work space. The current place everyone at is sort of like a play-pen.
We’re not in cubicles but instead, computers are arranged in a circle in the middle of the space. There’s an electronic keyboard by the sofa, an acoustic guitar leaning on a wall and Sharmila typing on her notebook at a corner.
Then there’s the Pirates of the Caribbean poster above a Beatles poster, and directly behind Ian is a quote by Homer Simpson which goes “It’s true, I’m a rageoholic! I just can’t get enough of RAGEOHOL!”.
Then I got my first assignment to cover - a music event named ‘Acoustics Echo’. The event is at MBPJ Civic Hall Auditorium, Jalan Yong Shook Lin, PJ on 29 May. The entry is RM15 per person but its free for the first 100. Besides musician, there’s also comedians. Make sure to be there next Friday!
And that’s pretty much all for the day.
I had many firsts today; and as I was getting ready to leave, I learned that there is always a first for everything for everyone. Its not what it is that matters, but how your attitude towards it that counts.
So if you’re going to do something new today, stand up straight, smile, and enjoy the ride.
P.S.: My fingers are still crossed in hopes that I don’t have to make any coffee.
