Another old classic returns

Fantasy Flight Games is fast turning out to be my favourite gaming company, as it announces the return of another classic game. Android: Netrunner is an LCG (living card game) that is based on Netrunner, an old card game first conceived and released back in 1996, by Richard Garfield (yeap, the designer for Magic: the Gathering).

Set in the cyberpunk futuristic world of Android, the game pits a megacorporation and its massive resources against the subversive talents of lone runners.

Corporation players try to score points by advancing their agendas (we’ll have to see what that really means in game terms), and netrunners try to score points by breaking through the corporation’s defenses and stealing valuable data. The first player to seven points wins the game, but not likely before he suffers some brain damage or bad publicity.

I never caught on with the Netrunner fad, but it was pretty big when the game first landed here in the 1990s. There was a regular playgroup, which more or less left the game when it went south after only one expansion. It even had a “virtual expansion” (these were popular for a while, for games that were discontinued), and was ranked by many as one of the more underrated card games of the 1990s.

FFG is proving to be a force to be reckoned with, and cleverly picking on classic gems of nostalgia. Well, let’s wait till year-end when this game lands, and see how it is. Now, where’s the (official) Blood Bowl expansion dammit?

Cadwallon expansion – King of Ashes

The expansions just keep coming for Fantasy Flight Games boardgame titles.

And the latest to check in, is for Cadwallon: City of Thieves. King of Ashes. The add-on will have new adventures, characters, equipment, Arcana, and a new catacombs board for the guilds to explore and loot!

In case you missed out, Cadwallon: City of Thieves is a fast-paced game of cunning thievery and ruthless skullduggery in a fantasy city steeped in magic and intrigue.

Two to four players each control their own gang of four thieves, competing to amass the greatest haul of loot from the many carefully locked chests scattered around the board.

The most successful players are as likely to claim their loot from the other gangs as they are to do the time-consuming legwork themselves.

Adding to the randomness and fun are the Guild, who direct the thieves from the shadows, as well as the lawmen themselves (the militia), who will sound the alarm and stop you – eventually!

Anyway, the gist is that the King of Ashes expansion will feature four new adventures, four new mercenaries, the monstrous Cyclops of Mid-Nor, and dozens of new Arcana, equipment, and intrigue cards. Release date is the third quarter of this year, so buckle up!

Buying cards online

What does a cash-strapped card flipper do when he wants most bang from his hard-earned buck?

Why, shop online of course! Let’s face it, whether it’s Magic: the Gathering or the World of Warcraft TCG, the random distribution of cards mean that it’s the best and worst thing, at the same time.

You might buy a box of booster packs, and still be short of quite a few rares, and occasionally, even uncommons.

There’s trading and all that, but what happens when everyone wants the same epic Monster / mythic Planeswalker?

Well, this is where web stores such as MTGMintcard.com and TrollandToad.com come in. Auction websites such as eBay can be handy as well, but sometimes, you just want to buy the cards straight, rather than wait for auctions to end.

I used to rely on MTGMintcard.com a lot when I played Magic and WoW actively a year ago. The Hong Kong-based web store ships pretty fast, with a pricing that is okay – not too cheap, but not exorbitant.

Best part is, they sure save me the hassle of ploughing through box after box for particular rare or epic cards!

It’s that time of the year again when a new World of Warcraft Trading Card Game (WoW TCG) set comes a-calling.

Tomb of the Forgotten, will check in worldwide by June 12, with more monsters, loot and other good stuff, then!

Very few preview cards for now, but the good news is, the previews will kick off on WoWTCG.com by May 26. The bad news? Well, we got around three and a half more weeks to wait it out, so, let’s keep on waiting shall we?

Late April round-up: X-Wings, angels & Ugg-wha?

Work’s picked up again for yours truly, which accounts for the silence on the blog for a good week plus.

The good thing is, there’s been a slew of updates gaming-wise, so let’s get right to the heart of things shall we?

Firstly, Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) finally gave Star Wars gamers a solid reason to rejoice, as they finally gave a solid release timeline for its Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game. This summer release looks like a solid combo of painted, high-quality miniatures and cards that depict the pilots, equipment and equipment that these little beaters pack.

Yes, there’s even astromech droids, dice and some funky tokens to go along these starter sets. The game will be sold in Core Sets, which presumably is enough to start anyone off, as well as the X-Wing, TIE Fighter, Y-Wing and TIE Advanced Expansion Packs, which add more fighters and pilots to the mix.

In other news, Wizards of the Coast has finally unveiled the entire card spoiler list for Magic: the Gathering’s newest set, Avacyn Restored. Being out of the scene for awhile now, what do you guys think?

And finally, I thought it’d be fun to highlight a pretty fun-sounding FFG boardgame, called Ugg-Tect. The team-based game has players racing to complete monuments in the cavemen era, accomplishing and performing “grunts” and actions along the way.

Sounds like another fun party game to me!

Return to Ravnica

Wizards of the Coast has certainly been not averse to revisiting older expansions, in churning out the new stuff. Yeap, here’s looking at you, Scars of Mirrodin.

Looks like mixing up the new and the old, will once again be the theme for the upcoming Return of Ravnica block, which has just been announced last week by Wizards.

The original Ravnica block gave us some pretty fun and memorable times, with plenty of thematic storytelling involved. The different guilds, powerful critters and spells, and of course, the now-super-pricey shocklands – ah, that block was one of the best in recent years, in my books.

How will Wizards reimagine this classic? How can they top the shocklands? Will some of the original set’s heavy-hitters make a reappearance? Find out in September then!

Game shops offer more than just the usual boardgames to their customers.

By CHEE YIH YANG

alltherage@thestar.com.my

GAME specialty shops have started to become more visible in Malaysia in recent years.

That’s not saying that there is a glaring lack of boardgamers and card gamers in the country. Judging by key events held (mostly) in the Klang Valley, there is a decent following here.

However, one thing that many will wonder is – how do the these shops keep their respective communities and fans active? What makes them come back to the same places, again and again?

Why people hang out

There’s certainly more than one thing in common for most boardgame hangouts and establishments. Firstly, the sense of belonging is reinforced by more than just being merely retailers and sellers of interesting and varied card and boardgames.

“The big difference is that we’re not just interested in selling, but also to actually build a community and teach younger players some skills. What players find in our shop is a tight-knit community where everyone helps each other out. Our regulars make it a point to come back every week,” said David Lian, co-owner of Warp Space Games (facebook.com/warpspacegames) in Old Klang Road, Selangor.

According to Comics Mart (facebook.com/pages/Comics-Mart-Midvalley/141820782516010), which is based in Kuala Lumpur, the things that maintain the interest of their regular patrons include being a convenient meeting ground for people of common interest, as well as a rather handy “daycare centre” for kids while their parents shop!

The owners also said that they often do well during lunch, with gamers indulging in “quick fixes” before heading back to class or work.

There are also some shops that pair games with other interests such as reading. Boardgame Depot (facebook.com/BGDepot) in Bangsar, KL, does this.

“People come over to the store mainly because there’s a wide range of board games and novels here. It’s always nice to have intellectual hobbies and our visitors usually come here for that. Additionally, they also appreciate the warm and homely atmosphere décor,” said owner Lucas Tho.

He even goes as far as to say that customers indulge in boardgames in order to break away from their addictions to electronic games such as MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role playing games), Angry Birds and even the latest craze, Draw Something.

“The warm and homely atmosphere we have is also another plus,” said Tho.

Making it regular

Some gaming communities thrive on routine. Jeff Au’s BoardgameCafe.net (http://blog.boardgamecafe.net/) group, which regularly meets on Friday nights, has seen his group grow from strength to strength. It started as a casual boardgame group that assembled regularly in the local kopitiam, but Au is now running his very own shop in Cheras, KL.

“We still keep very much to our regular Friday evening sessions, as that’s a good time for the working gamers to drop by and play. Public holidays give us opportunities to run longer sessions and explore more specialised forms of boardgaming such as the 18xx series (railway-building game) or even more lengthy boardgames such as Twilight Imperium 3,” said Au.

The BoardgameCafe.net also holds seasonal and semi-regular events. Au and his merry band of boardgamers have done annual “boardgame retreats”, where gamers and their families are invited to play boardgames in a resort or outstation setting. He is currently exploring the possibility of holding another retreat this year.

Newbies and pros

Other shops address accessibility and making sure upstart gaming fans are given the most convenient start. As miniature gaming has taken hold in Warp Space Games, Lian and his partners are innovating new ways to make it more accessible.

“We don’t want newbies walking in and feeling out of place at all. We’ve developed several programmes to help them get started in the hobby. For example, our upcoming Manufactorum Primaris Hobby Camp will be held during the school holidays and will feature three days worth of hobby and gaming time, while letting campers take home their own armies,” he explained.

Comics Mart also does pretty much the same thing, and addresses a much wider range of games, from role-playing games, to trading card games, boardgames, miniature games and deck-building games. What’s working for them are regular events, which will be publicised via Facebook. These include tournaments, demos and league games.

At the end of the spectrum, some think a more large-scale competition will draw the people in. Imagine Games has been promoting boardgames and miniature gaming for a number of years now, and its founder Edwin Wong will once again be having a Settlers of Catan competition, the Malaysian Catan Qualifiers. The winners of this competition will earn a trip for two to the United States in September, where they will represent the country for the World Catan Championships.

This event kicked off on April 1 across 14 official stores and 10 tournament centres in five states. In a unique format, the qualifiers will take place every weekend from April to June, so Catan fans can just pop by to learn the game, observe others, or play in as many official matches as they wish.

According to official organiser Imagine Games (http://web.mac.com/imagine newszine), the decision to use this more open format aims drive a fun and friendly celebration of this classic boardgame.

“We look forward to getting an entire nation excited about discovering and playing Catan over the next three months!” remarked Wong.

Settlers of Catan is an incredibly fun and popular boardgame. A pioneering Euro-boardgame (so-called, due to its origins from there) hit, the game is pretty much a staple in shops and boardgame cafes the world over, including Malaysia as well.

So, if you’ve played it, do you think you’ve got what it takes to be a Settlers of Catan world champion? That’s right, the road to the “finals” in the United States later this, kicks off now!

The official Malaysian Qualifiers for the 2012 Settlers of Catan World Championships kicked-off on April 1 with 14 official stores and 10 tournament centers across five states here.

In a unique format, the “qualifiers” will take place every weekend for three months (April till June) so Catan fans can just pop by to learn the game, observe others, or play in as many official matches as they wish. Of course, do bring friends and family, as the more the merrier!

After the three months of competition, the top eight highest average scores plus the top eight best scoring finishers will qualify for the National Finals in July, with the grand champion winning an all-expenses paid trip for two to USA for the World Championships this September!

According to Imagine Games, the official organizer, the decision to use this open format aims to turn the cold, formal nature usually associated with tournaments into a fun, friendly celebration of this great game.

More info is available by emailing the organizers at imagine.games@mac.com.
