WoW TCG card bans, ouch…

It’s not very often that card bans in trading card games (TCGs) happen, especially for a masterpiece such as WoW TCG (World of Warcraft Trading Card Game). But fans will be disappointed to note that the proverbial axe has fallen on three cards, to be exact.

But sometimes, despite best intent, games do get broken. With thousands of cards to manage and monitor, Cryptozoic has decided to remove Sava’gin the Reckless, Bottled Light and Etched Dragonbone Girdle from the more open, and very new Contemporary Constructed format.

Well, with majority of players having yet to take to the new format, the effect of the card bans remain to be seen on the secondary marketplaces. Sava’gin was worth a princely sum, so let’s see how this ban filters through?

I’m still deeply divided over card bans. How much should a game company do before implementing the ultimate ban sanction? What about cards that negate or overcome the powerful effects of other cards? Discuss away!

New WoW TCG Raid Deck – Time for Aspects!

WoW TCG (World of Warcraft Trading Card Game) fans will be excited to know that there will be a new Raid Deck product next month.

Battle of the Aspects has a worldwide street date of August 7, which is very, very soon! Now, there’s just been a whole spoiler-full article summary on the official Cryptozoic Entertainment website, right here.

Raid decks are standalone multiplayer products, and function with special rules, so players can get going and participate in a many-versus-one contest, against a preset deck.

The backstory for this special set, involves a huge dragon thing named Deathwing the Destroyer. Well, what matters more is that we’ll be getting more new treasure pack cards, in this very primo and special set. Well, there’s already a new Thrall confirmed for the set: can you say, uber-powerful? I’m drooling too much!

Now, the other interesting bit about Battle of the Aspects is the new WoW TCG variant that will debut with it. Dubbed the Chaos Format, you will be able to build decks that can only have single copies of your favoritest cards.

Yes, Magic fans will instantly recognise this as a ripoff, errr, homage to the now-staple Commander format. The Chaos Format has another neat rule, in which every ally can protect a hero, regardless on whether they have the Protector keyword or not.

Well, looks like we’ve got to hang on a little bit more before we try the new stuff!

The WoW factor

This month’s CARDS & BOARDS has CHEE YIH YANG talking to a local trading card game community that has thrived through Facebook and a blog.

BACK in January. I wrote about how there will be more virtual communities rising out of the relentless assimilation of social media and its web-related spin-offs in our lives.

This month, I talk to an individual who’s managed to start up a blog that features contributors from a local community of World of Warcraft TCG (Trading Card Game) fans.

Karry Lim Hock Soon, a 35-year-old system administrator, had been living and working in Cyberjaya when he was bitten by the World of Warcraft (WoW) MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game) bug.

His fascination for the online game soon translated into an obsession for the card game as well, which debuted back in 2006 (Upper Deck Entertainment made the game then). While he was in Cyberjaya, he initially found it difficult to locate players, until he stumbled upon a Facebook community based in the same locale.

A casual game between two players at a recent boardgames/card games expo at MMU Cyberjaya.

This was the WoW TCG.my Facebook group, facebook.com/groups/wowtcgmy/, which was then made up of mainly Multimedia University students.

“I played with the group for several weeks and was thinking about taking the group to the next level. That’s when I decided to start the blog and get writers within the group to contribute to the blog,” said Lim.

Online sounding board

Team CyberWOW (teamcyberwow.blogspot.com/), the blog that was started by Lim, is also affiliated with Cryptozoic Entertainment, who now produces the WoW TCG. (Upper Deck Entertainment lost the licence to make the TCG several years back to Cryptozoic.)

The articles cater to not only hardcore tournament players, but also the more casual WoW TCG crowd, with introductory-level articles that teach the less experienced on ways of rising to the top, and succeeding.

Naturally, the ultimate objective of the blog is to get more players clued in on the wonderful world of WoW TCG. For the uninitiated, WoW TCG is played between Heroes that have different “Classes”.

Each Hero class has its own unique strengths and weaknesses – the Warrior for example, is the typical “tank” class, sporting plenty of Equipment such as Weapons and Armor, but the Mage bears almost no Equipment, and instead relies on an arsenal of deadly spells, called Abilities.

The WoW TCG is thus very familiar to online gamers, as it’s essentially a cardboard treatment of the same virtual universe. The learning curve is reasonable, and is only slightly more complicated than the likes of Magic: The Gathering.

The game had a good start in Malaysia when it first burst on the scene, but faded away around the same time that Upper Deck started running into widely-reported troubles and delays of expansions. It picked up again once Cryptozoic revitalised the franchise, and WoW TCG got another major boost when local comic and game shop franchise, Comics Corner, started distributing the game again this year.

Grinding on successfully

Lim thinks social media played an important part in the sustenance of his local community. He feels that it’s made it easier for everyone to be kept abreast on what’s the latest events, in a real-time manner.

“Social media is another way to bring in new players and promote the game. I do not want this game just to cater for players who play the online game, but to all TCGs fans.

“Without social media, WoW TCG itself, and our community would not be a success and will not be where it is now,” said Lim.

So what are some of the key ingredients in ensuring a successful blog? He reckons that having a consistent stream of content works great. Having fresh content is important, so people keep coming back.

Right now, Team CyberWOW aims for updates at least once or twice a week. It doesn’t sound terribly intensive, but it’s harder than it seems as his group of gamers need to devote time to contribute articles.

Most importantly, Lim also aims to give as much local context as possible.

Articles written from a first-person perspective on player experiences in various events give a glimpse to everyone on what WoW TCG is really about.

The new WoW TCG meta – smells like Warlock!

So what’s the current World of Warcraft TCG metagame like?

Based on the 2012 Asia-Pacific Continental Championship, looks like Warlock is top dog now. Scott Landis writes on the World of Warcraft TCG website, that with cards such as Boundless Hellfire, the cloth class managed to win the tournament handily. Impressive stuff.

Landis spends some time running through the list of top cards used across the multiple decks that fare well. Nothing too surprising IMHO, as the very same cards have been making an impact for months.

Daedak the Graveborne, Mazu ’kon and Pygmy Pyramid are some of the more commonly used allies. The better news is that the latest expansion, Tomb of the Forgotten, seem to have made a significant impact. Hurrah for the new stuff!

Settling it, LEGO-style

LEGO (www.lego.com) is certainly enjoying a renaissance, with more and more collectors and fans taking to their fancy new product lines. And it does look like more exciting times to come, indeed!

Want to find out what happens when LEGO meets everyone’s favorite thinking-man’s strategy boardgame, Settlers of Catan? Popular tech website, Mashable.com, wrote recently  about a fan of both, who created a mash-up of the boardgame and the popular brick toys.

Click on the link above, and by going through the pictures, you should have an idea on how to come up with your very own Settlers of Catan boardgame, LEGO-style. Easy right?

I’m just waiting for the LEGO versions of the various expansions to the original boardgame, hah!

Wind up

Fancy a commerce and intrigue-based boardgame? Try out Fantasy Flight Games’ Sky Traders then!

This game of adventure and profit allows you to command a sky ship, as you search for wind-based business opportunities. Beware the Wind Pirates though: these evil bunch will set you back in your game!

The objective of the game is to become the Master of the Sky Guild. You do this by ferrying commodities in your ship. Some are worth more – there’s a handy Commodities Exchange sheet that keeps track of this – so choose wisely!

In short, Sky Traders is a curious blend of resource management, strategy and a little bit of basic economics thrown in, with the obligatory wild cards thrown in (the Wind Pirates). Don’t worry, it’s bags of fun though – no Economics 101 foreknowledge is required!

Sky Traders is available in better game shops everywhere by the way.
