Black riders

I’m a big Lord of the Rings (LOTR) fan, and being a card game and boardgame nutter, have played several games based on the awesome franchise.

My first ever Cards & Boards print column story was on the LOTR RISK boardgame. The LOTR TCG (Trading Card Game) by Decipher was one of my most enduring passions throughout the 2000s, when the game was in print, and its prime.

In fact, due to my new-found love for DBGs (deck-building games), I’ve even rekindled the love for that awesome TCG. Yes, there is an LOTR DBG! Fortunately, the TCG lives on, in the form of fan sites and what not.

black-rider One game I’ve yet to dabble in is Fantasy Flight Games’ (FFG’s) LOTR LCG (Living Card Game). Well, looks like the time is ripe for me to do so: the “Black Riders” Saga Expansion seems geared to be introductory, fun, and challenging at the same time.

With multiple “difficulty” settings, the set offers new and older players a variety of options. And of course, the slew of new cards will be another major pull factor!

Players can recreate three scenarios from the first half of the first book, The Fellowship of the Ring. Each can be played on its own, or in sequence, in a massive “Campaign” mode.

Previous sets seemed to allow one to two players (if you bought one set), but up to four players can game together if you have two “Core Sets” combined. Not too sure if the same applies to “Black Riders” – that’ll be worth confirming soon then!

“Black Riders” is slated for release sometime in the second half of this year.

A Dark Time now

self-preservationI may not be getting a lot of play time on the Star Wars Living Card Game (SWLCG in short), but am really loving the game. It’s quick and dirty Star Wars fun featuring some decent-looking artwork.

In case you’re wondering, the latest expansion pack, or Force Pack, is out. A Dark Time features thirty brand new cards, across multiple factions. The ones covered here include Jedi, Scum and Villainy, Imperial Navy, Smugglers and Spies and Sith.

My personal favorite looks like the Jedi and Scum and Villainy ones. The Jedi one (Self-Preservation) looks pretty exciting – I like how something like Unwavering Resolve gets to sneak in extra Force icons when you don’t have enough units to play in a Force struggle. This leads into a boon for the accompanying Gotal Outcast – bam, he’s now a double hitter against Dark Side objectives!

Wow, I really am tempted to buy a pack now. Aren’t you?

SW LCG ramblings

SWC08-cardfan-02In case you have not checked out Fantasy Flight Games’ (FFG’s) Star Wars Living Card Game (SW LCG) yet, by all means do get started right away here, at FFG’s official YouTube channel. It’s a great play by play streaming video tutorial on how the game works – much better way to learn compared to actually reading the rulebook!

Anyway, I have gotten more plays out of this game, and I am absolutely won over by how swiftly this card game can play. 30-minute games are very possible, with a maximum of 45 to 50 minutes, if things get drawn out.

In a nutshell, SW LCG is a fast-paced card game that plays up several key conflicts and battles, each time you play. I have to emphasis “fast” and “key”, as this non-collectible card game does not simulate the massive, sprawling battles you’re probably more used to, in the movies, and any of the spin-off novels, video games and other medium.

For example, in a recent game I played, a lone Y-Wing and several independent operatives or spies show up, and are promptly blasted by several Stormtroopers. Admiral Motti and several TIE Fighters follow suit, before Home One makes its appearance. The game finished with the Imperial troopers swarming the Rebellion to death!

cloud-city-operativeIn another game, a motley crew of young Jedi warriors get going, together with Home One. The Imperials throw some TIE Fighters and Stormtroopers in the mix, but get the Rebellion close off the win despite some accurate shooting from the notorious Boba Fett.

It becomes very apparent that the game is really geared towards plenty of customization, but the Objective set mechanics make it simpler and more complicated. Decks of at least 60 cards must be built based on six-card card pods (your Objective sets), and may not repeat more than twice per set (unless they’re labeled unique, or no more than one per deck).

There’s only a single Core Set so far: a two-player “starter” set that has everything that you’ll need to start playing. You get a more “complete” experience by buying two Core Sets and mixing doubles of selected Objective sets, but I’d hold off on buying as the first expansions – 60-card Force Packs – are already on their way.

LCGs operate on a fixed model, so no randomized cards and overpriced rares and such. This is another great reason to play this game.

Now, with monthly Force Packs coming in, you could buy one Core Set now, and wait for the expansions to come in. The first four expansions, are part of the Hoth Cycle – a vast majority of the cards come from the first story arc of the Empire Strikes Back movie. Yup, AT-ATs, Snowspeeders and then some!

The previews for these expansions are still not completely out yet, but it does seem that the sets will focus more on the ffg_mandalorian-armor-core-33-4Imperial and Rebel Alliance affiliations, more than anything else. The other four affiliations look to be represented too, but I’d bet my scruffy-looking nerf herder that all the key bits of the Battle of Hoth, gets their royal treatment, over the next four months.

If you’re more keen on the Smugglers & Spies and Scum & Villainy affiliations instead, there’s the Edge of Darkness (big) expansion to look forward to. Would it be possible to skip the Hoth Cycle and wait for that instead? Knowing how FFG would want to drive up sales, I highly doubt it, since I already see several Scum & Villainy/Smugglers & Spies cards appearing in the Hoth packs already.

But yes, it is very possible for us to just give the Core Set a whirl, for now. Fire away!

Geared for war

VA61-box-leftFantasy Flight Games’ amazing array of boardgames and card games gets another title, as it announces Gearworld: The Borderlands, a post-apocalyptic boardgame for two to four players.

The game of “negotiation, conquest and construction” is supposed to be a reimagined version of an older boardgame, “Borderlands”. It looks like another resource-based boardgame with the obligatory slew of miniatures, and fancy tokens, played over a neat mapboard.

In the announcement, there’s mention of the construction of “Skyworks”, which seems to be a key premise of Gearworld. It reminds me of a steampunk version of a Western, a la Deadlands. Well, hold on your horses peeps cos this one’s riding to a local gamestore by the third quarter of this year. Yee-hah!

Sudden Death is kicking off soon

I’ve a confession to make: I’m a bit of a Blood Bowl Team Manager Card Game nutter since the game made its debut back in late 2011. Heck, I managed to persuade the local gaming group to do a “league” throughout much of 2012, culminating in a number of “dream teams” and custom/homebrew Star Player cards.

Well, Fantasy Flight Games always have “sequels”, even the most obscure deck-building type of card games, and Blood Bowl was no exception. After more than one year plus of waiting, FFG finally sneaks in a preview, on the Undead team, after dropping an initial teaser way back in August 2012.

Goodness knows what caused the delay, but I suspect the Star Wars LCG might have a hand in things. No matter: this preview has given a ton out, in terms of the new Undead ball-kickers, and their Star Players.

At first glance, they look very strong. Not only do these bunch have fancy abilities like Regeneration (when downed, they have a chance to stand up again on a successful roll of an X), but they even have skills when they are downed. Yup, Mumma Hotep tackles players back, after you down the mummy – oh man, can’t wait for the rest of the Star Players to show up!

Game of Thrones is in town; more Millennium Falcon-able locations!

Awhile back I wrote about a standalone Fantasy Flight Games’ A Game of Thrones card game. Guess what, it’s finally here in Malaysia!

We’ve just received word from Imagine Games that the game is now in stock in selected local game stores, game cafes, and hobby stores, as well as Times Bookstores, Borders, and Kinokuniya. The suggested retail price is around RM115. Sweet!

On another note, yesterday I blogged about the Boardgame Depot hosting the Kessel Run sneak preview event, which can net winners and participants the cool X-Wing Miniatures Wave 2 Millennium Falcon, Slave 1, A-Wing or TIE Interceptors.

You won’t be able to buy these miniatures till their official release timeframe of February 2013, so yeah.

Turns out Imagine Games has clarified that there will be three other dates and locations apart from Boardgame Depot: 15 Dec in The Curve branch of Borders, 22 Dec in Toybox, Petaling Jaya and 30 Dec in the Spartan Games Arena.

For more information, do send email to Imagine Games at imagine_newszine@mac.com.

Get your Millennium Falcon in Bangsar!

Fantasy Flight Games’ awesome X-Wing Miniatures game may have had delayed shipment dates for its next expansion, but fret not! Here’s how you can score a brand-new Wave 2 Millennium Falcon, Slave 1, A-Wing or TIE Interceptor:

Bangsar-based Boardgame Depot will be holding the Kessel Run tournament, on Saturday, Dec 8, 2012 in its premises. Think of this as a special sneak peek event that will net winners the said minis, well ahead of the planned release timeframe of February 2012!

The Kessel Run tournament will start at 2pm, and is slated to finish by 6pm. Entry fee is RM80 per player and each player will get a free drink. But hurry, apparently there’s only EIGHTEEN (18) slots, so do register yourselves early! For more information, buzz Lucas at 012-427 7167 – the early bird catches the ticket to win a Falcon!

Sale time at Fantasy Flight Games

In line with the slew of “Black Friday” or Thanksgiving Friday sales happening now, Fantasy Flight Games is joining the mayhem by offering up massive discounts over some of its game titles, all at their website!

Juicy deals include markdowns on boardgames and role-playing games such as Chaos Marauders, Black Gold, Isla Dorada, Age of Conan and more! Unfortunately Horus Heresy is already sold out, a mere 24 hours after the sale began – tough!

Note while the sale seems rather excellent on the surface, the shipping costs to Malaysia can be a massive bummer. I tried to put Age of Conan and Ventura into the shopping cart, and the shipping costs was a whopping US$79, with the games costing only US$45!

But, there is still some discount at the end of the day. Why not check it out, after seeing what your friendly local retailers can offer you in terms of discounts?

Good times for Star Wars fans

Well, looks like it’s a darned good time to be a Star Wars fan. Several weeks back, Disney announced that it was buying up LucasFilm, AND firmly continuing the huge science-fiction and pop culture phenomenon with a new bunch of movies.

Game-wise, it’s been pretty good as well, with Fantasy Flight Games’ Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures seeing a decent start, even here, despite a small assortment of products.

The diverse games manufacturer is now heavily previewing its Living Card Game, which promises to give the franchise another boost. Haven’t had a chance to digest it yet? Then head on to the FFG website to get started, pronto!

Personally, I’m still disappointed that the LCG will not use any film imagery (ah Decipher Inc, you have been greatly missed), but artwork instead. The LCG treatment might seem more sensible and wallet-friendly, though my past conversations with other LCG players have given me the impression that the savings will be marginal.

After all, they reduce the money factor, but players are still encouraged to buy new sets that have cool new cards in them. Ah, only time will tell of course – hoping to score a set on loan, for a quickie review!

The Force is now here

If you’ve missed playing with X-Wings and TIE Fighters from the classic Star Wars universe, now’s your chance to catch up with a spanking new product from Fantasy Flight Games (FFG in short).

The gaming company announced a slew of Star Wars-related games, including a Living Card Game (slated for end-2012 release), and a role-playing game as well, and it looks like the X-Wing Miniatures Game is now available in better gaming shops in Malaysia.

FFG’s coup of scoring the Star Wars franchise is certainly a meaty addition to its already impressive line of gaming franchises, which currently includes boardgame and card game adaptations from famous “brands” such as Warhammer (Fantasy, 40k as well as the Blood Bowl settings) and A Game of Thrones (both the books and the TV series).

The miniatures in the X-Wing game are all pre-painted, and you get to engage in fast-paced battles that look pretty hot. In case you missed it, why don’t you check out the previews on the FFG website here. Don’t forget to also check out demo videos from FFG’s official YouTube channel here as well.
