WoW TCG for charity

How about gaming for a good cause? Classroom Café is running a unique World of Warcraft Trading Card Game (WoW TCG) charity event, named “Chase the Can”, where all attendees have to do is to bring in canned food as part of the “entry costs”.

The cans you bring will actually give players bonuses each game, so the more you donate, the more you’ll get. For instance, donating five cans will allow you to enter a lucky draw.

Curious? Check out their Facebook page here, for more information. Else, do get in touch with Eric Tee, who owns and runs Classroom Café, at yh_tee@hotmail.co.uk.

War of the Ancients is coming

The new set for the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game (WoW TCG in short) is coming soon, and the spoilers are arriving thick and fast! It’s time for War of the Ancients by the way, in case you were not clued in – so yeah, get ready!

It’s really back to basics as the more “traditional” races, such as Night Elves, Humans, Tauren and Orcs are revisited. And about time too, since there’s been tons of Monsters and weird races, in the preceding sets!

War of the Ancients marks a return to the WoW universe origins, with the obligatory bunch of new keywords and game abilities.

New abilities are pretty much a given in every WoW TCG set (heck, every single card game), but I think the biggest gimmick and draw has to the slew of characters reappearing as hero cards. I mean, Illidan Stormrage, Arthas, Uther the Lightbringer and Cho’Gall are just a bunch of lore-laden and legendary names any WoW fan would love to build decks around.

I’m guessing this is Cryptozoic’s way of pulling more people in, since being able to make these cards, and let people build decks around, is more or less an instant-win.

And talking about instant wins, I can’t wait for this set to be out! The more common uncommon Death Knight ability Death’s Decree is so simple yet fun. There’s a Pally ability that lets your hero reach 100 health (nope, not a typo). I’m pretty sure there’ll be more imba spells and stuff headed our way: you just wait!

In the meantime, watch this space for more details on pre-release events, release tournaments and more cool stuff! With the ongoing revival of WoW TCG in Malaysia, there’s plenty to look forward to!

The crowd goes WoW

By CHEE YIH YANG
alltherage@thestar.com.my

Two months ago, Eric Tee, 27, head of an investment company, decided to give the running of a full-fledged games café a go, having been a pretty active trading card and all-round gamer for many years.

Tee acquired Classroom Café in Subang Jaya, Selangor, a place that serves food and drinks, and also functions as a hang-out for board and card gamers around the area.

“I always had an interest in running a games café. Classroom Café was originally a board game cafe, but I brought in the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game (WoW TCG) because I have been interested in TCGs since I was young. It has turned into a table-top gaming establishment, so it can cater to the different types of gamers out there,” said Tee.

WoW’s the word
The WoW TCG factor is certainly a big one for Tee’s café, as fans of the card game flock from as far as Sri Petaling and Cyberjaya to play there.

He has big plans for Classroom Café, setting out some pretty specific goals for the place.

“My long-term plan for the cafe is to expand our menu, start running major WoW TCG tournaments on a regular basis – including the Darkmoon Faire events (considered top-tier events for the game), and possibly even franchising,” explains Tee.

Nats a-go-go
Classroom Café had its first major event last week with the WoW TCG Nationals 2012.

“We only had about 25 players, as the timing and short notice of the event probably affected the attendance. I firmly believe that we have plenty of WoW TCG players in the country, and am already looking forward to organizing the next event! All in all though, the Nationals was a decent start to begin with,” he said.

According to Tee, the top decks of the day were mostly Monster decks, with the top eight having three Monster Hunters, two Monster Druids, one Monster Rogue-Warlock, one Horde Mage and one Horde Rogue. The champion of the day was a Monster Hunter deck, piloted by Imran Hidayat Ahmat, 29, who works in a recruitment firm.

A long-time WoW TCG player since October 2006, Imran was also a fan of MMORPG (massively-multiplayer online role playing game). A regular at Toybox, another game shop that heavily supports WoW TCG, Imran spends time honing his playing skills and exchanging ideas with his gaming buddies there.

“It was exciting and very stressful at the same time, as I’ve already been practising since July but went away during the Hari Raya holidays for two weeks. By the time I came back, Nationals was only one week away and felt a little rusty. Fortunately, I was still able to pull through it,” he said.

Imran credits “a combination of luck and experience” for his win.

“In any TCG, luck is always a factor, because believe me – you do need a decent run in order to win. Experience helps as well, since the more experienced player is more likely to make better play decisions. I can’t say I’m a very experienced player myself, but I am constantly learning to improve myself when playing,” he said.

Imran only started out playing “for fun”, when a close friend of his encouraged him to try competitions. He’s never looked back since, and looks forward to attending a major tournament in the Philippines in the coming months.

When asked what kind of advice he’d give to new gamers, Imran said: “Practise plenty and always look back to analyse your mistakes to see what you could have done better.

“Be confident in yourself but don’t get too cocky. And never, ever, stress yourself out too much. At the end of the day, it’s still a game and the most important thing is you have fun and enjoy yourself.”

If you’re eager to get your gaming fix, check out Classroom Café’s Facebook page (facebook.com/ClassroomCafe). It is open from 12pm to 11pm daily, except Mondays.

WoW TCG card bans, ouch…

It’s not very often that card bans in trading card games (TCGs) happen, especially for a masterpiece such as WoW TCG (World of Warcraft Trading Card Game). But fans will be disappointed to note that the proverbial axe has fallen on three cards, to be exact.

But sometimes, despite best intent, games do get broken. With thousands of cards to manage and monitor, Cryptozoic has decided to remove Sava’gin the Reckless, Bottled Light and Etched Dragonbone Girdle from the more open, and very new Contemporary Constructed format.

Well, with majority of players having yet to take to the new format, the effect of the card bans remain to be seen on the secondary marketplaces. Sava’gin was worth a princely sum, so let’s see how this ban filters through?

I’m still deeply divided over card bans. How much should a game company do before implementing the ultimate ban sanction? What about cards that negate or overcome the powerful effects of other cards? Discuss away!

New WoW TCG Raid Deck – Time for Aspects!

WoW TCG (World of Warcraft Trading Card Game) fans will be excited to know that there will be a new Raid Deck product next month.

Battle of the Aspects has a worldwide street date of August 7, which is very, very soon! Now, there’s just been a whole spoiler-full article summary on the official Cryptozoic Entertainment website, right here.

Raid decks are standalone multiplayer products, and function with special rules, so players can get going and participate in a many-versus-one contest, against a preset deck.

The backstory for this special set, involves a huge dragon thing named Deathwing the Destroyer. Well, what matters more is that we’ll be getting more new treasure pack cards, in this very primo and special set. Well, there’s already a new Thrall confirmed for the set: can you say, uber-powerful? I’m drooling too much!

Now, the other interesting bit about Battle of the Aspects is the new WoW TCG variant that will debut with it. Dubbed the Chaos Format, you will be able to build decks that can only have single copies of your favoritest cards.

Yes, Magic fans will instantly recognise this as a ripoff, errr, homage to the now-staple Commander format. The Chaos Format has another neat rule, in which every ally can protect a hero, regardless on whether they have the Protector keyword or not.

Well, looks like we’ve got to hang on a little bit more before we try the new stuff!

The new WoW TCG meta – smells like Warlock!

So what’s the current World of Warcraft TCG metagame like?

Based on the 2012 Asia-Pacific Continental Championship, looks like Warlock is top dog now. Scott Landis writes on the World of Warcraft TCG website, that with cards such as Boundless Hellfire, the cloth class managed to win the tournament handily. Impressive stuff.

Landis spends some time running through the list of top cards used across the multiple decks that fare well. Nothing too surprising IMHO, as the very same cards have been making an impact for months.

Daedak the Graveborne, Mazu ’kon and Pygmy Pyramid are some of the more commonly used allies. The better news is that the latest expansion, Tomb of the Forgotten, seem to have made a significant impact. Hurrah for the new stuff!

WoW TCG now back in Comics Corner

Well, straight after I raved about the new incoming WoW TCG expansion set, there’s more good news. Your friendly games stockist and hangout Comics Corner will be filling us with supplies of the new set, Tomb of the Forgotten, this month onwards!

Better yet, there they now have stocks of the newer recent expansions, Crown of Heavens and Throne of the Tides. And, Champion Decks too!

Well, for the record, supply of WoW TCG even in the Klang Valley has never been the most plentiful. Am glad to note theis positive change in this, as more stocks should feed us fanboys well enough!

Will it mean that we will now have another place to participate in sanctioned events, crack packs and win cool premium cards? Let’s see what happens next shall we? ;-)

Don’t forget this Tomb

Looks like them Cryptozoic folks continue to keep busy: time for a new World of Warcraft (WoW) TCG expansion, this time, Tomb of the Forgotten!

First bunch of previews have been running on the official WoW TCG website for close to a week now, and man it looks sweet. Okay, so that’s probably the inner WoW fanboy in me speaking, but I’m quaking in my boots looking at the spoilers for this new set!

There are new keywords, such as Sentinel – “When this ally exhausts for the first time each turn, you may ready it.” Just plain wow! If you look at what General Husam does, it’s pretty sick. Yeah, sucks to be attacking anyone with that guy, really.

By the way, the General guy, plus a host of other allies and Heroes, are Tol’vir. Not too clear on who these guys are, except that they look a lot like them ancient Egyptian deity and mummy guys. And I like mummies!

Crikey, mummies, in the WoW universe? Brokenly awesome new cards? Spankingly good artwork? Take my money please!

Get app-ed

By CHEE YIH YANG

alltherage@thestar.com.my

IT no longer surprises us all on how different our daily life pans out now. Tweeting/Facebook-ing, tablet computers, smartphones and virtual communities are essentially what more and more people are talking about, and experiencing, too.

United States-based Internet marketing research company comScore Inc had estimated in November 2011 that 30% of Internet traffic in the US came from tablet computers (http://bit.ly/xm5xMp) – a statistic which is remarkable, since this is supposed to be higher than actual numbers of tablet computers being owned in the country (no total figure on this is available, however).

That’s just one statistic of course, as it’s easy to drive home the point that plenty of people are on social media and latching on to smartphones and tablet PCs pretty quickly too.

Commander Life Counter Tracker

On a purely anecdotal basis, I’m noticing, too. I might still rely on my classic notebook while I’m out playing and running my own weekly Blood Bowl Team Manager card game league, but every other player in my group, and the local game shop, seem to be whipping out a tablet PC, or at the very least, doing something on their smartphone.

This month, I’ll be running through a smattering of cool apps, tools and implements for “traditional” gamers. Also, try to be less judgmental when someone whips out his phone/tablet when they’re dueling you in Magic: The Gathering or indulging in some Catan – he’s probably just keeping score!

Keeping score

I could not do an article on trading card games (TCGs) and boardgame-related apps and software without mentioning the world’s most popular TCG, Magic: the Gathering.

Being the grandaddy of card gaming has its privileges, with the chief one being that tons of apps and software have been created in recent years.

It’s funny that the first official iPhone, iPad and Android app from the game’s manufacturer Wizards Of The Coast was only officially announced in January (http://bit.ly/xdjeRH). Doesn’t matter, though, because the Magic: The Gathering Toolbox is now here (http://bit.ly/xuTIhq)!

Basically a life counter, a deck builder, a card database and a store locator, the Toolbox is a must-have for all Magic fans. Best part is, it’s free! IMHO the ability to track duels and Commander format multiplayer games, and having a handy card database (over 10,000 cards and counting) are reasons alone to install this app.

You can even socialise your deck via Facebook and e-mail, though the former feature could have been a lot smoother in my limited experience with this app.

If you’re looking for a cleaner-looking alternative, do check out the non-licensed, third-party Magic app iMtG (http://bit.ly/kQ8FkS). Besides the staple life counter, card lists and deck sorter, it’s also got card pricing and Facebook-sharing linked as well, which seemed to work better compared to the Toolbox for me.

The only downer is the fact that it does not “look” official, so we’re stuck with generic looking symbols and stylings with this one.

WoW TCG fans will love this

Long-time readers would have noticed my recent switch back to the World Of Warcraft TCG, and yes, there’s a horde of cool apps for this game!

The favourite for WoW TCG fans everywhere is the WoW TCG Heroes app (http://bit.ly/zI6Dou), which is the coolest way to play your hero. Never worry about misplacing that precious Hero card now, and the need to bring a dice, for you can do both from your iPhone (and only iPhone, for now).

Alternatively, there’s also Overkill: WoW TCG (http://bit.ly/xjda6A), which is not only neat-looking, but chock-ful of useful things, such as deck building, card image browing, deck filtering, and on-the-fly card updates.

Overkill screenshot

Personally, I can see why Heroes seem to be the more popular one, as the Hero card aspect is seriously simple yet brilliant at the same time. Overkill has its merits too, and does look a lot more impressive on an iPad, so yeah, I’d actually get both just for the heck of it.

Goodies shortlist

The very notion of boardgames becoming “virtual” and playable solely on your smartphone or tablet computer might run counter to my “purist” instincts (that is, I still feel that real-life, physical boardgames and its ilk are it), but I guess, in times when gamemates are scarce and when quickies are needed, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.

Here are two recommended websites that don’t just write about, but list and even review classic games like Scrabble, Monopoly, and a favourite of mine, Risk – appadvice.com (http://appadvice.com/applists/show/board-games), and Common Sense Media (http://www.commonsensemedia.org/mobile-app-lists/best-board-game-apps).

If Euro boardgames are more of your thing, check out Apps Mile’s reviews (www.appsmile.com/tag/board-game/), and of course, Boardgamegeek.com’s massive trove of iOS game reviews, previews and news, at its very own web link (www.boardgamegeek.com/blog/164/ios-board-games). The latter is pretty much the final word, especially if you’re looking to play app versions of Catan, Titan and heck, even gamebooks (okay – you’re REALLY old if you remember what these are).
