Luis Suarez 101

Liverpool have got a striker that has the talent to potentially erase Fernando Torres from their memories.

Luis Alberto Suarez, 24, cost Liverpool 23 million pounds, but he comes on the back of an impressive World Cup campaign with Uruguay (complete with match-saving professional hand-ball) and a 2009/10 season where he scored 49 goals in 48 games for Ajax.

I know they say this for pretty much every good finisher, but this guy really reminds me of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Give him half a yard in the penalty area, and he’ll finish it off – left-foot, right-foot, headers, volleys, half-volleys… He’ll put em all in the back of the net. And he has a deceptive turn of pace and the odd flash of skill to keep defenders on their toes.

His overall goal-scoring record for Ajax stands at 111 goals from 159 games over the last four seasons, and he’s had 12 goals from 24 games so far this term.

Found this compilation of 50 goals from him during his Ajax days. You’ll see what I mean about him. Great player. Congratulations, Liverpool fans.

(Though I must add that Mateja Kezman did arrive at Chelsea boasting an equally impressive goalscoring reputation, but yet he now finds himself, at 31 years of age, playing in the Hong Kong first division for South China)

  1. Suarez reminds you of Solskjaer? A good few Liverpool fans might consider this blasphemous but from watching a couple of Uruguay and Ajax games, Suarez actually reminds me of a young Robert Bernard Fowler, only quicker.

    Welcome to Anfield El Pistolero!

    PS: What about Carroll?

Hands-down, one of the smartest transfer moves this season. Torres? Ha. I still don’t see why Chelsea were willing to pay so much for him considering the season he has had so far. His WC’10 performance was needless to say, horrendous as well. 50M pounds. I gotta say, I doubt it’s a good buy. This cup will most probably be you-know-it’s, I don’t wanna say it. :P

  3. Chip: Fowler! Yes, that’d be a more apt comparison =) Being a United fan dreaming of him joining us, I’ve been comparing him with Ole all this while =P

Wai Min: I wouldn’t mind if United paid 50 million for him! He’s an exceptional player, and I’m sure his slump in form is just temporary. Every player goes through it at some point in their careers. And as Torres showed when he played Chelsea this season, he can still turn it on when he wants to.

Did you watch Chelsea against Sunderland this morning? They were absolutely phenomenal. The front three combined really well, things are back to the way it has used to be. Don’t get me wrong, everyone knows Torres is an exceptional player and yes, I agree that his slump is temporary. But at this point, this time of the season, do we really need a new striker to ‘shake’ things up? I don’t think so. Let’s just hope it doesn’t go south. We have had enough of that this season.
