Trouble magnet

OKAY, so how many of you saw Justin Bieber’s arrest coming? Well, like most of you out there, I did as well. There was only one way the whole Bieber fiasco, that many fans and haters have tolerated for over a year, could come to a halt – with an arrest, which finally happened last week after the 19-year-old singer was busted for driving under the influence and resisting arrest.

Canadian bad boy Justin Bieber risks US deportation

Say cheese: This must be the prettiest mug shot in the history of mug shots.

The incident, which happened in Miami, Florida, United States occurred after Bieber and his buddy were caught drag racing, with the singer behind a rented Lamborghini Galardo, on a residential street and his father Jeremy on the lookout.

Yes, not only was Bieber Sr at the scene of the crime, he had also allegedly facilitated his son’s bad behaviour by blocking off the street so that the Never Say Never singer could race. Nominate him for the father of the year award, anyone?

While some may argue that Jeremy was trying to protect his son, as well other residents in the neighbourhood, this kind of tolerance may exactly be the reason why Bieber found himself bawling in a jail cell.

Why would any sensible parent tolerate their superstar child’s atrocious behaviour? Bieber had it coming. Punching random folk. Check. Vandalising city property. Check. Spitting on random people. Check. Vandalising neighbour’s property. Check. Drugs found at home. Check.

All that happened in less than a six-month span and yet, Bieber was still out partying. Unless of course, the rules are different for a young singer who has sold over 15 million albums worldwide and has a net worth of US$160mil (RM512mil).

Suddenly, Miley Cyrus’ behaviour doesn’t seem so bad now, does it? She is provocative and extremely sexual but nevertheless none of her actions have put anyone’s life in danger.

As much as the world loves to hate Bieber, there are some people who want to see him get out of this rut, and that we all believe could only happen if the people around him stop being his enablers. That is not an easy task given that there are influential folks who say thatBieber should be left alone instead of reprimanded for his actions.

At the Grammy Awards red carpet on Sunday (yesterday, Malaysian time), country star Willie Nelson said this about Bieber’s shenanigans: “He’ll be all right, Let him grow up and then we’ll talk about him.” Just so you know, Nelson has been arrested several times for drug possesion.

Justin Bieber

I ain’t gonna listen to you!

Well, Bieber’s parents could listen to Nelson and just dismiss this as a rebellious phase in their son’s life or they could take a page out of Mitchell Winehouse’s life to understand how it feels like to lose a talented child due to a reckless lifestyle. Mitchell’s daughter, Amy, was a multiple Grammy award winner who sold millions of records and died at the age of 27 in 2011, after years of abusing drugs and then alcohol.

Unlike Winehouse, Bieber still has a chance to get back on track and turn his life around. Like our favourite troublemaker Lindsay Lohan did. Her mother Dina was at the centre of the young star’s disastrous lifestyle and yet instead of stepping up to her disciplinarian role, she was seen hanging out at clubs with the star who had been sent to jail six times even before she turned 27. With Dina’s questionable parental role, it wasn’t surprising that Lohan’s career took a plunge.

It was only after Dina was removed from Lohan’s life equation that the actress, showed signs of improving not only her personal life but her career as well. Now, Lohan didn’t get better all by herself. She had someone who was genuinely invested in the girl’s well-being and that person is none other than media mogul Oprah Winfrey.

Yes, everyone was shocked that Winfrey even knew Lohan existed. But who wouldn’t after seeing the starlet’s ever-changing mugshot on every website, television show and magazine?

It took only one person to put her in her place and and look at where Lilo is now. Okay, she is not exactly in the next Oscar-worthy movie but more important, she’s not in jail.

And that’s exactly what Bieber needs in his life right now. Someone to tell him to pull his pants up and not behave like a spoilt brat who thinks that the world owes him a living. Bieber needs people to cut off the hangers-on who stop him from focusing on what he is passionate about – music. He needs parents don’t give in to all of his whims and fancies. In other words, he needs Oprah frigging Winfrey.

Sharm says: Is there anything that Oprah cannot do? I don’t think so.

Drop dead gorgeous

LET it be known that I was the person who spoiled Breaking Bad for Andrew Lincoln, the star of Fox International Channels’ other hit television show The Walking Dead.

This looks like a wedding photo? Nyeh, sure ... why not?

This looks like a wedding photo? Nyeh, sure … why not?

Lincoln and Norman Reedus, who respectively play Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead, were in Singapore last week as part of a promotional tour, and yours truly was one of a few journalists from around the region who had the opportunity to talk to the stars about the television series and more.

By the way, if you don’t want any Breaking Bad spoilers, skip the next four paragraphs.

“His character is already dead in his show, so he can just appear on yours, right?” I asked, referring to Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston’s wish to make an appearance on The Walking Dead as a zombie in the background.

“Oh my God, I haven’t watched it yet. Shut up … I was just gonna watch the last season. Spoiler alert,” said Lincoln.

“You didn’t know?” asked Reedus, to which his cast mate said no. “Where have you been?” he asked.

“Doing The Walking Dead!” replied a distraught Lincoln.

Well in my defence, no true Breaking Bad fan would wait this long to watch its series finale – which aired late last year – so I’m not going to feel bad about ruining it for Lincoln.

Anyway, besides possibly ruining the ending of what some say is one of the greatest television series of all time … for the actor of another show that is well on its way to reaching the same status, the interview went pretty well.

Usually, when people hear that I get to rub shoulders with celebrities (all in the name of work), the inevitable question that follows after that is: “Do you ever get starstruck?”

And the answer to that is usually, and honestly, no.

So far, I have been lucky to have had opportunities to meet many A-list stars including Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal, and although I may have had “fangirl” moments before or after meeting some of them, it was never during the interview.

However, all that changed last week at The Walking Dead junket. When the show’s two main stars, Lincoln and Reedus, walked into our meeting room at a swanky hotel, I couldn’t even look up to see their faces. That’s how nervous I was.

The only thing that was running in my head was “I’m in the same room as Rick and Daryl. I am going to die” – and couldn’t even think of a question to get the interview going.

However, some brave soul broke the ice and quickly, even before anyone could say “Don’t Dead, Open Inside” (a Walking Dead fans’ inside joke), Lincoln and Reedus became the most awesome people I have interviewed, ever.

Reedus, dressed in a fitted light gray shirt, black tie and black pants, looked hot as hell with his unkempt hair falling – but in a sexy way of course – over his face.

Reedus is super hot, on and off screen.

Reedus is super hot, on and off screen.

He was distracted whenever Lincoln spoke and from where I sat, it looked as if he was staring straight at me. Reedus could’ve just blanked out, and was probably just thinking about food or maybe what possessed him to wear that hideous pair of socks that day, but hey, a girl can always dream, can’t she?

The chemistry between the cast members is undeniably strong and the unspoken brotherhood they share on screen translates in real life as well.

Lincoln and Reedus are obviously good friends and it’s the kind that totally makes you jealous for not being part of the exclusive gang that makes a living pretending to be zombie killers. Oh well, maybe in another lifetime.

But cementing the fact that they are two of the coolest people on and off the screen, Lincoln and Reedus spent quite a fair bit of time mingling with the journalists after the interview just to take photos, sign autographs and simply talk.

No way was I going to say no to taking a photo – or two, or three – with my favourite stars from the television series that I watch religiously. I have people to brag about this and the photos would come in handy!

Sharm says: A friend, who saw the picture of me hugging Lincoln, commented that it looks like a wedding photo; and you know what, I’m going to pretend it is! Maybe one day, I’ll print it out and send it to him as an apology for ruining Breaking Bad for him. Sorry, Lincoln.

Zac Efron breaks his jaw

Ouch. That must really hurt.

BRITAIN-ENT-CINEMA-THE LUCKY ONE

The handsome 26-year-old actor sure can’t seem to catch a break (no pun intended) as he fell and broke his jaw at the entrance of his Los Angeles home. Apparently he slipped on a puddle of water and fell real hard.

E! Online reports that the actor’s jaw has been wired shut and that he also required a few stitches for a gash on his face.

Poor Zac has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons this year. Last month, it was reported that Zac went to rehab, twice, for alleged alcohol and drug addictions.

Sharm says: Get well soon Zac. Hope the drugs they give at the hospital won’t trigger a relapse any time soon.

Look, it’s Nori West!

Baby North makes an appearance. What a lucky day for us.

This is almost as good as catching a glimpse of the Lochness monster (but in a nicer way, of course).

Proud mama Kim Kardashian Instagrammed this photo of five-month-old Nori with Givenchy creative director/stylist Riccardo Tisci (who happens to be daddy Kanye West’s BFF).

Sharm says: Say what you want about Kim and Kanye … but they sure did make a good looking baby.

Hard working Jenner

Kylie Jenner, the youngest sister in the Kardashian/Jenner clan, told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show that she spends more time on work than her studies.

Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner is a busy little girl.

The 16-year-old fashion designer/reality TV star admitted that she only does three to four hours of school work a day.

Kylie and her sister Kendall, 18, are currently home-schooled after they dropped out of a prestigious school in Los Angeles last year.

Their parents, Bruce and Kris, allowed the girls to study at home and focus on their careers as fashion designers as well.

“I usually work. I’m pretty busy all day,” Kylie told Ryan.

Sharm says: Well, if only that kid could work on her manners. Have you seen how she treats her family? She’s such a brat.

Super cute Jennifer looked as gorgeous as always.

At a press conference prior to the London premiere, Jennifer sang praises about her family, who she credits for her success.

“My brothers told them ‘let me go’ and I lived without parents for a couple of years. They are my rock. They are always there … I love this movie so much and I’m excited for everyone to see it.”
