Win In Time goodies and movie passes!

Who knew the curly-haired, boy band alum Justin Timberlake would turn out to be such a good actor?

After a string of successful films in the recent years, Justin is back to prove that he’s no flash in the pan actor.

The good looking actor is taking a wild turn as an action hero in the upcoming In Time, starring opposite another beauty Amanda Seyfried. And from what we can see in the trailer, Justin could very well be the next Sylvester Stallone….okay, maybe that’s a bit too much.

Acclaimed writer-director Andrew Niccol brings In Time which also stars Alex Pettyfer and Cilian Murphy.

When Will Salas (Justin) is falsely accused of murder, he must figure out a way to bring down a system where time is money — literally — enabling the wealthy to live forever while the poor, like Will, have to beg, borrow, and steal enough minutes to make it through another day.

Get updated!

WEEK after week, celebrities never fail to amuse us with their baby news, fabulous relationships and scandalous gossip.

Last week was no different. Check out the hot news circulating good ol’ Hollywood.

New couple alert

Who can resist Ryan Gosling’s puppy dog-eyes look? Well, not sexy actress Eva Mendes who was seen canoodling the Drive actor last Sunday. The pair met during the filming of The Place Beyond The Pines and seem to still be in the honeymoon phase of their relationship.

Sharm says: Can’t wait to see how far this unexpected pairing will go!

George and Ryan have new partners...no, not each other!

OMG! It’s official

Eternal bachelor George Clooney is finally acknowledging his relationship with

former wrestler Stacey Keibler. The 50-year-old actor brought along his gal pal for the New York Film Festival to catch the premiere of his latest film The Descendants.

The pair had been keeping their relationship on the down low for the past few months and this is the first time the duo is photographed together as a couple.

Sharm says: I still can’t get over the fact that she used to wrestle.

It’s a boy!

Hilary Duff is over the moon after finding out the sex of her baby. The pregnant actress had been going around saying that she had a feeling the little baby in her tummy’s a boy – and she was proven right after a check-up at the doctor’s last week.

She announced the sex of her baby during an interview with funnywoman Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show. This would be the first child for Hilary and her husband, pro-hockey player, Mike Comrie.

Sharm says: Aww … Lizzie McGuire is all grown up now. *wipes tears*

It's a boy for Hil!

It’s real

Stop the craziness people. Beyonce’s baby bump is real! The rumour mill worked over time last week when Beyonce’s tummy seemed to have “lifted” when she sat down for an interview.

People started speculating that Beyonce is indeed not pregnant and is in fact expecting a baby through surrogacy – like how they claimed when she first showed off her baby bump during MTV Video Music Awards.

Beyonce's baby bump is real, folks. But this is just a mannequin, k.

It doesn’t help that someone started the story that one of Bey’s staff members has gone into hiding after news leaked that she’s pregnant.

Sharm says: Can’t a woman be pregnant without such drama?

Finally, she speaks

After months of keeping mum about her divorce from Ryan Reynolds, actress Scarlett Johansson finally opened up about it.

She revealed to German magazine GALA that she was quite depressed after the split, though she wouldn’t elaborate on the reason behind the separation.

“After about a week or so, I pulled myself together and started to go to the gym all the time,” she said. The actress also credits her twin brother and 89-year-old grandmother for helping her through the break up.

When asked about the reason for the break up, she said,” That question is too personal. I will only tell you this: I can be overcritical – with myself and other people. And I don’t compromise.”

Sharm says: Well, at least she’s no longer with Sean Penn.

Newly engaged

Trace Cyrus finally popped the question to his girlfriend Brenda Song. Miley’s brother Tweeted: “I am very excited to say, last week I asked my girlfriend Brenda Song to marry me and she said YES! We are both very excited to be engaged.”

Last month, the couple was plagued by the rumour that Disney star Brenda was pregnant with their first child.

Pictures of Trace and his mother Tish returning from the hospital with a teary-eyed Brenda only added drama to the speculation.

Sharm says: Congrats to the happy couple!

Split for real?

Moving trucks were spotted at Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore’s home last weekend and people are saying the former golden couple is heading to Splitsville indefinitely.

Ashton’s alleged mistress also spoke out saying that she has proof of the two of them together when Demi was away promoting her latest directorial effort Five.

Sharm says: Oh dang, I hope this couple would get through this phase. I actually like them together.

Watchu’ said?

Even celebrities cannot escape the dangerous foot-in-mouth disease.

Once in a while, we hear the unfortunate news of a celebrity losing their integrity to the vicious foot-in-mouth disease.

No matter how intelligent, gorgeous and rich celebrities may be, they simply cannot help but occasionally fall prey to this unforgiving malady.

Last week, it was Johnny Depp.

* The latest victim *

The usually quiet and pensive actor came under fire for an insensitive remark he made during an interview with Vanity Fair, in which he compared having his picture taken, especially during photoshoots, with being raped.

“Well, you just feel like you’re being raped somehow. Raped … It feels like a kind of weird – just weird.”

It is definitely a terrible way to describe a photoshoot, no matter how invasive Johnny may find them to be, and he soon realised his grave error.

Well, either he figured that out on his own account or the immediate uproar from the public drove the message home.

Many were none too happy that the talented actor compared something as trivial as a photoshoot with rape – a traumatic ordeal that has affected many lives around the world.

The actor was quick to issue an official apology stating, “I am truly sorry for offending anyone in any way. I never meant to. It was a poor choice of words on my part in an effort to explain a feeling.”

It was a poor choice indeed.

If only Johnny took a second or two to rethink his choice of words, he would’ve realised that verbs such as “defiled” or “violated” would have worked well in his statement. But unfortunately, he didn’t.

Just like actress Kristen Stewart who, while promoting Twilight: Eclipse, compared the attack of paparazzi cameras with sexual assault. “I feel like I’m looking at someone being raped,” she told British Elle. “A lot of the time I can’t handle it.”

* Think before you speak, Kristen...*

No, seriously. She actually said that.

While the world is sorry that Kristen is subjected to crazy paparazzi attention everywhere she goes, it doesn’t mean that they would take any crap that comes out of her potty mouth.

Kristen soon apologised for her stupid statement which she described as, “an enormous mistake.” She admitted to not thinking her remark through before saying it out loud.

You see, that’s the problem most celebrities have these days; they do not think before they speak. They just say whatever comes to their mind and expect everyone to accept them.

Too bad Johnny and Kirsten, that’s not how things work anymore.

In this day and age, political correctness is crucial if a celebrity wants to sustain their livelihood and if you think that the public is forgiving, think again.
Gone are the days when someone famous could say something insensitive and get away with it.

Country singer Hank Williams Jr learned that lesson the hard way.

* It's monday night blues for you now brother...*

Last week, ESPN pulled his iconic song All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight from the opening of the Monday Night Football show, after the singer compared US President Barack Obama to anti-Semitic Nazi leader Adolf Hilter.

Dude, seriously?

The singer spoke on the show Fox & Friends, comparing a golf game between Obama and politician John Boehner to an outing featuring Hitler and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Needless to say, that video went viral.

In that same interview, Hank also compared Obama and US vice president Joe Biden to the Three Stooges. OMG, how crazy is this fella?

Public ire is not something a celebrity should want and one famous American “shock jock” found himself jobless after garnering just that.

A few years ago, shock jock Don Imus was sacked from his popular radio show after he described a mostly-black women’s college basketball team as “nappy-headed h**” during a live segment.

And no, he reportedly wasn’t on any drugs when he said that – he was just plain crazy, apparently.

* People no likey Don Imus *

That controversial statement didn’t sit well with most Americans who demanded the radio get DJ fired from his show, and its parent company, CBS, had no choice but to let go of Don – one of their most prominent DJs at the time.

Another disgraced radio DJ is Russell Brand (or Mr Katy Perry) who had to resign from his radio show after a prank he pulled with his co-host went awry.

Russell and Jonathan Ross were due to interview actor Andrew Sachs on the telephone but when the latter did not pick up their call, they decided to leave a few nasty messages on his answering machine.

* Stop running that mouth Russ *

The duo spoke of sexual acts involving Andrew’s grand daughter (who Russell claimed to have had an affair with before), and they were downright rude.

The inappropriate messages incensed the public who didn’t wait long to voice their unhappiness – Jonathan was suspended and Russell felt “guilty” and resigned from the show.

The actor later said that when he listens back to the damaging messages, it was like hearing “two idiots dancing towards a canyon.”

No kidding, Russell.

Sharm says: I’ve been infected with this disease many, many times. Just like that one time I told my editor … erm, never mind.

Horror-bly successful

By NIEZAM ABDULLAH

FIRST there were the debates over action movies in local cinemas. Now, the controversy has shifted to ghost movies and fears that they encourage superstitious beliefs.

It began with former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s commenting that these films caused people to believe in the supernatural.

According to Finas, 12 of these scream flicks were shown this year. Of these, two films hit the jackpot – Khurafat collected RM8mil at the box office while the latest, Hantu Bonceng, has garnered RM8.5mil so far.

Hantu Bonceng, which stars Zizan Razak and Juliana Evans, is a box-office hit.

These horror movies are obviously popular with local theatregoers, and the question is how much of a grip do they have on their audience’s minds.

After all, this is not a new genre. Dracula, produced by Tod Browning in 1931, was the first horror film, followed by James Whale’s Frankenstein.

Scream flicks were produced from the start of Malay cinema, and revolve around local supernatural beings. The popular cerita hantu were Sumpah Orang Minyak (1958), Mata Syaitan (1962), Raja Bersiong (1963), Puntianak Gua Musang (1964), Naga Tasik Chini (1966), Toyol (1981) and Perjanjian Syaitan (1981).

Films are produced to meet fans’ demands. Before this, local moviegoers lapped up ghost movies such as Nang Nak from Thailand and Pochong from Indonesia.

Besides, the fascination with the supernatural is universal, and it makes commercial sense to tap its entertainment value. It’s no wonder the vampire love story in the Twilight series is such a hit.

Horror flicks’ entertainment value was first recognised in the West, and they have continued to churn them our because they are so popular.

The local film industry is thriving, but it’s a pity that it’s often saddled with accusations of shaping negative images in audiences. Is that fair? After all, no one who watches Dracula would be driven to suck human blood, or turn to witchcraft after watching Harry Potter.

Harry Potter fans may go as far as learning and chanting spells that are featured in the book and movies, but it is all done in jest.

Local film activists also disagree with the notion that ghost movies will influence their audience negatively.

Director Ahmad Idham and Mamat Khalid believe there are lessons to be learnt in every film produced.

The deluge of horror films is not to be disdained as audiences learn about the follies of following deviant teachings.

Meanwhile, Universiti Malaya’s Media Department senior lecturer Associate Professor Dr Abu Hassan says everyone should not be finding fault with films because society will not turn to the supernatural simply from watching films in that genre. People watch films, he said, for recreation.

Dr. Abu Hassan Hasbullah says local filmmakers are impeded by too many regulations and too little funding.

He adds that local filmamakers make so many horror films because their creativity freedom is curbed by many restrictions and rules that sometimes do not make sense. Film producers also does not have the budget to produce more influential films, such as political, epic or war films like in other countries.

Artistes also have to adhere to guidelines and external interference; there are scenes in Hantu Bonceng that were said to tarnish the sanctity of Islam.

Abu Hassan says all these restrictions on filmmakers’ creativity led to their failure to produce good scripts for the public.

“If we want to produce a historical film, some people will accuse us of instigating something. Likewise, there will be problems if we want to produce a film on a politicians.

“Because of all these pressures on our filmmakers, they found it better to focus on popular film genres. And these days, it’s horror films.” he says.

The public has to look positively at why certain films are produced, such as to educate. For intance, P. Ramlee’s Orang Minyak was to discourage moviegoers from dabbling in deviant acts. His aim, like other filmmakers, was to educate, and not to lead his audience astray. It’s up to the audience to learn and adopt the right practices.

Then, there are those who say that filmmakers lack the knowledge to produce the scripts.

But Dr Abu Hassan begs to differ; he says film directors have to do extensive research on their subjects, unlike some who only know how to criticise.

“If a person wants to make a war movie, he has to research war. And if he wants to produce a historical film, he has to research different aspects of war.

“These examples show that fimmakers have to be knowledgeable to produce their works. It’s not easy to make films that capture’s people’s attention,” he says.

Dr Abu Hassan adds that the Government needs to increase the funding for local films if they want the industry to undergo a drastic change, and to produce the kind of films that fulfill their criteria. There is only limited funds and loan facilities available to filmmakers, hence the low quality of the films.

The local film industry should not be politicised because the development of a country does not hinge on its film genre but on its education system, he says.
