Boy bands’ turn

This will be the year the K-pop boy bands make their debuts.

By NATASHA IMAN

alltherage@thestar.com.my

THIRTY days into 2012, and it has become apparent that the K-pop industry has taken on a new direction. While the output of female idol groups were the trend in 2011, the focus is now on boy bands.

Last year saw the debut of 27 female idol groups in total, bringing the average number of debuts per month to approximately two girl groups.

* Rania *

A handful of girl groups such as Dal Shalbet, A-Pink and Rania managed to break into the mainstream K-pop scene.

However, some girl groups such as Wind Hold Venus and Swan.B  failed to emerge from that pack of debuts.

The influx did ensure that girl groups remained the “hot” topic in K-pop throughout last year. But the many girl groups making their debut distracted fans from existing groups, and no one achieved significant popularity.

Towards the end of 2011, TS Entertainment, the South Korean entertainment company behind girl-group Secret, highlighted an online list titled “Boy Idol Groups Planned for Debut in 2012”.

This list revealed members and companies that were in the midst of preparing and training boys that were to debut in 2012 under the major South Korean entertainment companies.

The non-exhaustive list included SM Entertainments project group dubbed M1 and M2, TS Entertainment’s group B.A.P, and other boy groups by companies such as YG Entertainment, Pledis Entertainment, Big Hit, JYP Entertainment and also Cube.

Out of this forecast list, three male idol groups have already made their way into the K-pop scene within the span of a month and fans are eagerly awaiting the emergence of a surge of male K-pop groups.

Exo-M and Exo-K

On Jan 27 last year, SM Entertainment had announced it would be debuting a new male group. However, fans have been kept waiting since then.

After almost a year of anticipating the debut of the group, a pop-up timer was released on their official homepage featuring a logo and a 24-hour countdown timer that included the words “From. EXO PLANET”.

The timer counts down to a string of teasers showcasing snippets of songs from the group’s upcoming album. They also introduce different members that were to be part of the groups Exo-M and Exo-K respectively, with one group based in China and the other in Korea.

Exo-M and Exo-K officially released the prologue single What Is Love on Jan 30 in both Mandarin and Korean.

However, their official debut date as a complete unit remains unknown.

B.A.P

B.A.P, an acronym for “Best. Absolute. Perfect”, debuted its song on Jan 26, and quickly followed up with their first stage appearance the next day, and a showcase featuring all their members the day after.

Prior to the debut of B.A.P, its member Yong Guk was featured in the song of fellow label mate Song Jieun’s solo track Going Crazy, before making his official solo launch with the single I Remember.

Another fellow member, Himchan, was an emcee on MTV The Show before joining B.A.P.

Its most noted members are Zelo and Yong Guk that currently form B.A.P’s sub-unit of Bang & Zelo.

The sub-unit have also held a fan meet and sign event in Kuala Lumpur earlier last month, which attracted about 2,000 fans, highlighting their popularity amongst international fans even before their official debut.

Chaos

New boy group Chaos comprising members HeeJae, DongMin, HyunSun, DuHwa and Park TaeYang have also been garnering much attention, being the first of the boy groups to debut this year.

Their first single She Is Coming was released on Jan 6, and was well received by fans in Korea and internationally.

The group made its debut through music programme SBS Inkigayo on Jan 8, pulling off an impressive dance routine while showcasing flawless vocals.

Their performance caught the attention of K-pop fans, and they have been dubbed as rivals for idol group Exo-M and Exo-K that will be also debuting in the same style as Chaos.

However, Chaos will be promoted mainly in Korea and Japan, instead of China.

While fans of K-pop around the world are rejoicing at the number of eye candy being churned out of South Korea, it has really led me to wonder whether the K-pop scene is starting to favour quality over quantity.

I am not saying the music scene is lacking talent. However, it has become increasingly common to hear about groups making their debuts one day and being on hiatus the next, simply because they are not unique enough.

Auto tune, dark concepts, cute concepts – we’ve all seen those, and are getting tired of them.

What K-pop fans want to see are not fresh faces with the same old concepts. Rather we want new artistes that bring their own personal music styles to the mix.

Coupled with talent and flair, it is no doubt that the newly debuted male idol groups will continue to grow stronger throughout the year.

Till then, we can sit back, enjoy and watch them battle it out for the 2012 rookie awards.

Demi high on whip-its?

OMG. You’re not going to believe this.

You know how Demi Moore was hospitalised for “exhaustion and fatigue’? Well, apparently it’s more because of anorexia and drug overdose.

* Poor Demi *

The poor actress who was rushed to the hospital was treated for inhaling a dangerous amount of nitrous oxide – also known as the laughing gas.

A friend who found the former Mrs. Kutcher claimed that the 49-year-old actress went semi-conscious after doing a few rounds of whip-its (usually used by teenagers to get a quick high).

Demi who has been looking rail-thin recently was set to play feminist activist Gloria Steinham in the Linda Lovelace biopic Lovelace.

Report says that the actress is pulling out of her current project and looks forward to building back her life sans husband.

* Clueless Ashton *

And while Demi was spending the night under medical care, her soon to be ex-husband Ashton was photographed ‘surfing’ in the flooded streets of Brazil.

The actor was in the country for the Sao Paolo Fashion Week.

Scene stealers

AWARDS season is always the best. It is that time of the year when Hollywood’s big names come together to show off their couture dresses, suits, diamonds and arm-candies and still find time to honour their peers for their outstanding work.

The 2012 People’s Choice Award kickstarted the awards season and last week, we watched in anticipation as British comedian Ricky Gervais took the stage at the 2012 Annual Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles.

Golden Globes...*yawn*

The excitement was definitely warranted because the last time Ricky hosted the prestigious show, he killed it with his verbal celebrity-bashing. While some found his cruel jabs at celebrites funny, most thought that he was tactless and crude.

But that didn’t stop the Golden Globes producers from calling him again for hosting duties – for the third time – this year.

Everyone was prepared for some serious celebrity-roasting and while Ricky kind of delivered, it wasn’t as good as we had hoped.

The host was mild compared to his antics last year and it was obvious that his speech was restricted to several topics that clearly were pre-approved by the team behind the targeted celebrities.

But what was more disappointing than Ricky’s restrained behaviour that night was that neither Brad Pitt nor Angelina Jolie won the awards they were nominated for respectively.

* Brad and Angie went home empty handed. Boo! *

Everyone (okay, I) was really rooting for the power couple and had already imagined them thanking each other in their acceptance speeches. It was going to be perfect.

But alas, Brad lost out to his pal George Clooney in the Best Performance By An Actor In A Motion Picture – Drama category, and Iranian movie A Separation won the Best Foreign Language Film award instead. Hmmph.

Yeah, we know that George gave a stellar performance in The Descendants but it is so Brad’s turn to win an award already! It’s just not fair that George keeps winning everything. *sulk*

Well, that’s it. We should stop trusting a bunch of hoity-toity old folks to select the rightful winners for awards anymore. They obviously don’t know what they’re doing…pfftt.

And that is exactly why Sharm on the Scene is taking the liberty to choose the winners (for selected categories only) for the upcoming Screen Actors Guild award this Sunday….and yes, Brad Pitt is definitely a winner here.

Here are some of the awards that will be given out at the upcoming SAG awards:

Love is in the air…for some

Pining for Juliana Evans

It wasn’t easy for actress Juliana Evans to decide to leave the country, especially since it’s for a long time.

The 23-year-old actress left for the United States early this year to pursue her communications degree in the University of Michigan for two years.
Juliana says she is sad to be away from her family and friends. She also had to give up on her desire to be more active in acting.

“I am sad, but I have to pursue my studies abroad for my future. I am actually not ready to leave my family and friends,” said Juliana when contacted recently.

Juliana said she will learn about production during her two years in university so she could work behind the scene after her graduation. The actress of the film Hantu Bonceng hopes her experiences in the US would mould her into a more mature person. However, she hopes her fans and fellow artistes would give her the opportunity to be active in the art scene upon her return.

Meanwhile, comedian Zizan who is rumoured to have dated Juliana said he will miss her.

Zizan said he’ll fly to the US to visit Juliana if he has the time.

“While she is away, I’ll be more active in the arts scene so I won’t miss her so much,” shared Zizan.

Zizan, who was nominated for the most popular actor in comedy, and most popular television host at the Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian 2011, said him missing Juliana does not mean they are dating, but that they are merely good friends.

New romance?

They have both denied the rumours, but the gossip on the romance between actress Rozita Che Wan and Zain Saidin just gets hotter.

Rozita has always avoided questions on her life partner, and ideal man.

She has also been linked to the former host of Akademi Fantasia season eight Shahir, and they are said to have met at a party.

But as that gossip died down, Rozita created a ripple when she was seen with Zain at the Genting Highlands Resort in early January.

Rozita was shocked when asked about the sighting, but did not deny going out with Zain.

“I admit I went out with Zain in Genting Hihglands. But it wasn’t just the two of us – we were accompanied by my two sons,” said Rozita who is a divorcee.

She said they were at the resort as it was her children’s school holidays.
Zain is close to her sons, who are 12 and 15, and so she asked him to accompany them on their short trip.

Zain, however, did not want to comment on the gossip, but he also did not deny the rumours.

Zaid said he was doing Rozita a favour by accompanying them, and said he was just “a chauffeur” on that trip.

“I was only accompanying Rozita and her children. I don’t want society to misunderstand that we are dating,” he said.

Marriage on the rocks

The marital problems between actress Rita Rudaini Mokhtar, 36, and football star Aidil Zafuan Abd. Radzak, 25, have escalated.

The couple, who got married four years ago in Narathiwat, Thailand, have been facing problems.

Initially, Aidil’s family did not approve of their marriage. Things didn’t improve even after the birth of their two children – three-year-old Airit Rayyan Rizqin and nine-month-old Airit Ragqa Arjuna. The couple are no closer to resolving their differences.

The latest news is that Aidil has decided to move out of their home while Rita and their children were back in her hometown in Kangar, Perlis.

Rita said when she returned she found her husband’s clothes, car and motorcycle gone.

“My husband also texted me to say he is leaving our home. As a wife, I couldn’t do anything. It’s up to him,” said Rita.

The popular drama actress said her maid saw her brother-in-law inciting her husband to leave her.

Her maid told her that Aidil’s twin brother Zaquan Adha had helped him carry his things out. It is believed that Zaquan’s wife Ayu Raudhah was also present.

“I am sad at the interference in my marriage. They should advise him to mend our marriage, and not worsen my relationship with my husband,” said Rita.
For now, she is leaving it to the Almighty to determine what will happen to her marriage.

What price, fame?

There are a few things that truly bring the year to a spectacular close on the K-pop scene.

Apart from anticipating the arrival of more rookie groups and album releases, the year-end brings with it special music programmes such as the KBS and SBS Gayo Daejeon shows.

These programmes often feature a string of performances from many of the popular Korean idols.

While these special performances are eye-candy for fans, the increased burden on the artistes having to rehearse and prepare for the shows have landed many of them in hospital.

Exhaustion and fatigue are becoming increasingly common among Korean artistes even without the pressure of year-end shows.

K-pop idols often go through hours of rehearsal time in order to put on a flawless performance. With the added pressure of having to compete with new groups that crop up all the time, veteran artistes often choose to forgo rest and rehearse more.

Some idols have taken to social networking site to express their fatigue. Gahi, the frontman of girl group After School, tweeted “Feels like a heaving (sic) evening” after the recording of year-end concerts and shows have ended.

Juggling rehearsals and interviews are no longer the only things included in the schedule of a Korean artiste as variety show programmes have also become more demanding.

Kiss And Cry is one of these programmes. It requires a guest to take part in a series of ice-skating competitions.

f(x)

When Krystal, a member of the group f(x), was booked to participate in the show, she found that it was just too big a burden for her.

Just a month before appearing on Kiss And Cry, f(x) had released a new album and to promote it, Krystal had to attend interviews, shows and other events. When she finally came on the show, she fainted on the ice during a performance.

Apparently, the incident was not the first time that Krystal had fainted during a show. Two years ago, the singer fainted on stage while performing Mr Boogie at the 2010 Lotte Concert.

Too much to bear

Some K-pop idols have also taken to acting to either boost or revive their career.

Popular TV dramas such as Dream High 2, High Kick and Athena have all featured popular K-pop artistes. However, the demanding schedule and recording sessions force some artistes to stay up all night in order to complete their work for the day.

On Jan 1, 2012, Park Jiyeon, a member of South Korean girl group T-ara, was hospitalised for fatigue from almost non-stop rehearsals.

Jiyeon

Jiyeon is currently acting in the popular drama Dream High 2. She was said to have gone for the shooting of the drama at 4am, right after she finished recording a year-end programme.

An associate for the artiste stated that Jiyeon had been rehearsing for the music programme in a sleep-deprived state and that “it was a shame that she had a drama shoot afterwards”.

Jiyeon is not the first member of T-ara to have fallen prey to fatigue. On July 19 last year, Hyomin, too, fainted while coming back from the filming of a drama.

She was taken to hospital and diagnosed with fatigue from being too wrapped up in promotional duties for the group’s new song and for her new movie, as well as filming a TV show.

South Korean artistes who have to promote their work both in their home country and in Japan are also feeling the strain as they have to travel between the two countries all the time.

Members of SECRET were reported to have suffered from fatigue as they had to perform promotional duties back-to-back in both Japan and South Korea.

Hyosung, a member of SECRET, was hospitalised after having performed and appeared at eight different places within a short period of time.

In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that exhaustion and fatigue are part and parcel of being in the limelight. Is it all really worth it, though?

A number of K-pop idols speak of sacrifice being the main key to success, but exactly how much of a basic need can you sacrifice before it becomes detrimental to one’s health?

Perhaps some day the Korean music industry shall see some kind of intervention in order to improve the working conditions of these idols and regulate their working hours.

Till then, all we can do is support our idols and of course, send words of encouragement each time we see a worrying Tweet from our favourite K-pop stars.

Hi there Blue Ivy Carter!

SO it has finally happened. Beyonce Knowles and Jay Z have welcomed their first child together – a daughter.

* Congratulations! *

NY Daily News reports that the singer had checked into the Lenox Hill Hospital in New York under the pseudonym Ingrid Jackson, and gave birth on Saturday. Both mommy and baby are reportedly doing just fine.

Keeping in with Hollywood’s current tradition of giving odd names to celebrity babies, Bey and Jay have also chosen a unique moniker for their newborn child – Blue Ivy Carter. Yup, seriously.

Fans were earlier confused as to whether the child was called Blue Ivy or Ivy Blue, and one of Beyonce’s celebrity friend helped to clear the confusion.

More tweets started to flow in from fellow celebrities, congratulating the new parents on their bundle of joy.

Long time friend Russell Simmons also wrote: “congrats to my good friends Beyonce and Jay-Z.”

Sharm says: Now there is only one thing left to do…to wait and see whose looks the baby has inherited. Let it be Beyonce’s *fingers crossed*

New stories for the year

HAPPY New Year everybody! It’s a brand new year and guess what? The world hasn’t ended and that means we can still look forward to crazy, unbelievable and fantastic stories from celebrities in 2012.

Last year was pretty interesting but in all honesty, the celebrity stories were … how would one put it … “meh”.

Well, except maybe for that sudden Kim Kardashian wedding extravaganza/divorce hullabaloo, and Amy Winehouse’s untimely death.

It is never really interesting to read the same things about celebrities over and over again – it gets old easily.

There are only so many times we can read about the Kardashians launching a new product, or Justin Bieber making a surprise appearance somewhere, or Lady Gaga forgetting to wear clothes or Lindsay Lohan heading to jail … again.

For this week’s article, let’s forget about what the celebrities want to do in 2012. Let Sharm On The Scene tell them what we want to read about them this year.

Taking a sabbatical

As much as we say that we hate them and don’t want anything to do with this family, the truth is our lives would be totally boring without the Kardashians.

Yes, we claim that we dislike their TV shows but when we accidentally tune in to Keeping Up With Kardashians or Khloe & Lamar or Kourtney & Kim Take New York on Channel E!, we still watch them.

There is just something about this family that makes us want to know more about them … although if you think about it, there is nothing so special about the clan to begin with.

#in2011: They bombarded our living room with their endless reality TV show and spin-offs (they even introduced us to Spin Crowd which focuses on Kim’s besties – Jonathan Cheban and Simon Huck).

They forced Kim’s Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event on us, making us take four hours out of our precious lives to watch Kim get married to Kris Humphries, only to have her file for divorce 72 days later.

#in2012: Let’s hope that the Kardashians will make an announcement that they’re finally giving reality TV a rest. Or maybe Ryan Seacrest should take Scott Disick’s advice and focus on the younger sisters – Kendall and Kylie – as the older gals may have just passed their prime.

What’s wrong with being normal?

How many of you still think that Lady Gaga is all about the gimmick? For someone who claims to be so focused on her music, she sure lets her clothes and appearance make more noise than her songs do.

#in2011: Lady Gaga’s Born This Way became the anthem for misfits of the world. For those who felt as if they didn’t belong anywhere, they felt at home with Lady Gaga and her hordes of “Lil’ Monsters”.

So much so that if you were a “normal” person, you weren’t accepted into this clique simply because, well, you’re not unique.

#in2012: Okay, how many of you want to see Lady Gaga in a pair of jeans, T-shirt and maybe sneakers? Yeah, this is what a “normal” person would probably wear.

If the singer is really genuine about representing everyone who wants to be themselves, then she should also give props to those who simply go about their lives in regular clothes. Not all of us are really into wearing dresses made out of meat, you know?

Act decent

When Pon De Replay hit the airwaves in 2005, people took notice of Rihanna. It also impressed music moguls like Jay-Z and Kanye West who then took the Bajan singer under their wings.

She went on to release more hits songs such as SOS, Umbrella and Shut Up And Drive, got in a scuffle with Chris Brown and proceeded to make headlines for her personal life instead of her music.

She emerged from the Chris Brown situation as a victim and eventually cut all ties with her ex-boyfriend and pursued to reach greater heights in music.

#in2011: The singer totally made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Somehow, Rihanna became more sexually charged and that was evident in her song choices, music videos and live performances.

Even the way she dressed every day was over-the-top sexy. The singer was linked to several men, namely Jay-Z and Drake.

Rihanna also got into another controversy after a magazine editor categorised her style as a “n***a b***h”.

The singer got angry, played the race card and the editor eventually resigned from her post. But did you know that Rihanna had many times referred to herself as a n***a on Twitter? *tsk, tsk*

#in2012: First up, Rihanna should show some respect and stop using any kind of racist terms on herself. Secondly, she should stun the world with a proper hairstyle and not one that looks as if she stuck a furry animal on her head.

Finally, we want to see Rihanna dressing more appropriately and not give the wrong message to young girls that it’s okay to walk on the street with half your bum (or crotch) hanging out.

Turn her life around

As much as we want to ignore Lindsay Lohan, we can’t. You know why? Because we all love a happy ending and want to see the day when Lindsay will start making movies and/or sing again.

She’s not a bad girl, really, and even though she has made some terrible mistakes, that girl’s time in Hollywood is still not up yet. Let’s hope she pulls things through this year.

#in2011: Everybody knows how and where Lindsay spent last year. She was either in a courtroom, a jailhouse, under house arrest, out shopping or doing janitorial work at a morgue in Los Angeles. She was also featured in Playboy, which didn’t sell very well unfortunately.

#in2012: Wouldn’t it be great to hear that Lindsay has cleaned up her act and is given a chance to star in a movie alongside A-listers such as Ryan Gosling or Johnny Depp or George Clooney?

Although Lindsay is a little messed up now, it cannot be denied that she was a pretty good actor once upon a time and all she needs is that one (more) chance to prove that she can do things right again.

Noteworthy newsmakers

THE Hollywood news factory worked overtime this year. Not a day went by without us hearing about some celebrity doing something crazy which, of course, made the headlines the next day.

Ahh, celebrities … how mundane our lives would be without them.

While many interesting things happened last year ( weddings, untimely deaths, meltdowns), only some things are worth repeating.

Here are the awesome stories that made the cut for Sharm On The Scene’s Top 10 Celebrity News Of 2011.

Sheer madness

Charlie Sheen lost his marbles in 2011. The former Two And A Half Men actor had a meltdown, “adopted” porn stars to live with him, berated Chuck Lorre (producer of the sitcom) in interviews, lost his job and made #Winning and #Tigerblood two of the most pointless hashtags to trend on Twitter.

Sharm says: It’s good to note that there’s a semblance of normality in Charlie’s life now. #winning

Jailbird Lindsay

Just when we thought that the 2010 jailtime had scared Lindsay Lohan into being a good girl, she went and got herself a theft charge in February.

The actress was accused of stealing a necklace and sentenced to 120 days in jail and 360 hours of community service. She served the sentence under house arrest and was made to wear an ankle monitor.

However, she failed a random alcohol test, got her probation revoked and was sent to jail.

Lindsay was ordered to complete 400 hours of community service at the local morgue.

But in between all that she also found time to pose nude for Playboy magazine.

Sharm says: How do you solve a problem like Lindsay?

Dead at 27

We knew that singer Amy Winehouse’s drug and alcoholfuelled lifestyle was nothing short of suicidal but her untimely death came as a surprise nonetheless.

The singer was found dead on July 23 and became the latest celebrity to join the infamous “Forever 27” club, which Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and James Dean are also “members”.

Sharm says: This is not a club anyone should wish to be a part of…

He’s NOT sexy?

Ryan Gosling “pwned” 2011 with his awesome performances in movies like The Ides Of March and Drive, and looked super great while doing it.

So, when People magazine picked Bradley Cooper (pictured) as its 2011 Sexiest Man Alive, that decision didn’t sit well with some.

There was a protest (online, at least) and everyone demanded that the magazine revoke the title from Bradley, who on The Graham Norton Show, kind of agreed with the public.

“He (Ryan) literally looks like he’s in a photo shoot, like he just came off the runway … and I literally look like the neighbour that never comes out of his house.”

Sharm says: OMG, Ryan’s gorgeous eyes and crooked smile are to die for. Ryan Gosling FTW.

No love story

You know what was missing this year? The story of Taylor Swift hooking up with someone and breaking up almost immediately.

The self-confessed commitment-phobe’s last fling was with actor Jake Gyllenhaal which ended in December 2010.

Taylor has been single ever since, which is quite uncharacteristic for the singer who draws inspiration from her (often failed) relationships for her songs.

Sharm says: Don’t worry Taylor. If Jennifer Aniston can find a man for herself, so can you.

Cracked … just like an egg

Lady Gaga loves to push boundaries, in music and in fashion. So, when she showed up to the Grammy Awards in an egg, people didn’t even bat an eyelid.

Anyway, the singer was carried onto the red carpet in a huge eggshell-type incubator, which her stylist Nicola explained as Gaga being in “incubation”.

Gaga then “hatched” from the egg while on stage as she performed Born This Way.

Sharm says: Sometimes I wish I could throw eggs at Lady Gaga. I’m so over her antics.

Bootylicious and preggers

When Beyonce announced that she was pregnant, Twitterverse went crazy. Like, really crazy.

Right after the singer announced her pregnancy at the MTV Video Music Award, a record 8,868 tweets per second were posted that night!

Wow, who knew that many people cared about Jay-Z becoming a father?

Sharm says: Let’s hope that the baby inherits her looks from her mom.

The baby wears Prada

When news broke that David and Victoria Beckham’s fourth child was going to be a girl, everyone was overjoyed.

Now, Victoria will have someone to pass on all her Birkin handbags and super high heels to!

Harper Seven Beckham was born in July and she is perfect. No, she really is. The darkhaired chubby baby is already a fashionista – you won’t believe the kind of wardrobe the little tyke rocks.

Sharm says: This is my favourite celebrity family … right after the Brangelina-clan, of course.

Baby drama

Justin Bieber got himself into a little baby mama drama in November when Mariah Yeater accused him of fathering her child.

The 20-year-old woman claimed that she and the 17-year-old singer hooked up after one of his shows in Los Angeles, and that she immediately got pregnant after that.

Her son was born, and according to her, the baby looks “just like Justin”.

Justin challenged her case and even took several paternity tests to prove that the allegations were false. The case was withdrawn and Mariah’s lawyers dropped her as their client.

Sharm says: Well, there will be a case to settle when there is actually one.

Till death do us part…not!

Their wedding wasted four hours of people’s lives this year. When E! channel promoted Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries’ wedding as the fairytale event of the year, people dropped everything they were doing just to see the couple of six months walk down the aisle.

Little did they know that 72 days later, the couple would separate. The reality TV-star filed for divorce and stated “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for separation.

Sharm says: We knew the marriage wouldn’t last but seriously, 72 days?
