It is commonly known that a student’s world is completely different from the real world. Most students have no inkling about work life. Job shadowing is a good way to allow these two worlds to intersect.
“Job Shadow Day provides exposure of students to actual working situations, which helps them explore the jobs out there in the market, a factor that plays a big part in enabling students to decide what jobs would suit them and how to work towards them,” said Sunway University College Students Services director Lee Siok Ping.

Recently a job shadow exercise was held for 37 students at Sunway University College in Selangor to acquaint themselves with jobs held by staff in subsidiaries under the Sunway Group. The companies that participated included Sunway Lagoon Theme Park, Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, Sunway City, Sunway Lagoon Club, Dekon Holdings, IT Shared Services Centre and Group Human Resources.
Students were divided into groups of two and each group was allowed to shadow an employee for 3 hours. The range of jobs that students could shadow was varied and encompassed a CEO to other staff in marketing, finance, operations, construction management, human resources, front office and IT.
After the job shadowing, students made a presentation about what they learnt through the exercise.
“It was a great opportunity to learn,” said Choong Kar Wai, a Bachelor of Business Management student.
