Monday November 9, 2009 Live beats Taylors Symphonic Band's concert By TANG LI QUN and CHUNG WEN HARN

Students who have an interest in music or play musical instruments can join the Taylors Symphonic Band (TSB) and further enhance their musical skills as well as share their passion for music. TSB is not only about playing in a band; it is a hub, a place where all musicians come together to share, enjoy and have fun with music.

The first annual concert was Genesis: The Story Begins and it was held last month at the Taylors University College campus in Subang Jaya, Selangor.

The event was a symphonic extravaganza that entertained the crowd. It marked the beginning of the band’s journey to play and share music and even come up with new compositions.

TSB’s own a capella group delighted the audience, who danced along to the beats of A.R. Rahman’s Jai Ho (from the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack) played by the full TSB orchestra.

The string section thrilled the audience with their waves of emotive melodies, playing tunes from Japanese anime films like Kimi Wo Nosete (from Castle In The Sky), One Summer’s Day (from Spirited Away) and A Town With An Ocean View (from Kiki’s Delivery).

That romantic spell was then broken by the ensuing interpretation of the song Reflections from Mulan by six brass soloists.

Audiences were then treated to a suprise - a Stomp!-inspired performance!

Everyone cheered and clapped to the movements of the performers. They brought the campus down with their loud, exuberant and definitely the most blood-pumping performances of the night.

But it was not over yet, as Team L.F.R. (Live For Respect) took to the stage next with their Michael Jackson-inspired moves and street dancing.

The a capella group went on stage again to show their vocal skills with a clever medley of pop songs like What Can I Do, I’m Yours, Umbrella and The Show.

The guest performers, Night Garden Quintet from Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre, then calmed the audience with their woodwind performances, followed by Taylor’s Jazz Band’s performance.

To close the evening, TSB presented their arrangement of Love Story Meets Viva La Vida, starting with the cello-strumming and moving rendition with the cello, viola, piano and flute, making the audiences’ hearts flutter and mesmerized. Later, the whole band performed the grand heart-pumping Viva la Vida to wrap up the concert.

All in all, the concert was a blast. But it was just the beginning of a brand new era, the first chapter in the Taylorian’s history of music, a new beginning.
