What do you think is a good age for a young person to leave home?

Albert Khor, 22, Glasgow, UK
"I think 19 should be a good age to leave home, although no one can give a definite answer. Many 17-year-old Scottish youths who left home for university could not handle the newfound freedom and they often started drinking a lot in their first year of university, so I heard."

Daphne, 21, Johor
"18, when one is globally recognized as 'matured', to avoid troubles."

Yong Chen Wei, 20, Nottingham, UK
"When they realize how big the world is and when they develop the hunger to explore it."

Hannah, 17, Penang
It really depends on the maturity of the person. I know people who left home at the age of twelve to study overseas and people who are forever trying to get work transfers so they can stay at home even when in their late twenties.

Parthiban Muniandy, 24, PhD student
"Home is where the heart is? I think a right time to think about seeking an independent life away from parents and family would be when we trust in our abilities to take care of ourselves, but are still willing to listen openly to others’ advice.
It is impossible to pin-point an age, because I have met really mature teens and some very immature adults in my life."

Irene M. Cho, 28 going on 29
"When they have matured. The age could be 18 to 38. Some young people mature fast because of forced circumstances such as death of one parent or the responsibility of being the eldest in a family of many siblings."

David Lian, 26, Kuala Lumpur
"Well, I've got married two years ago and I still live with my parents (though I'm about to move out soon)."

Tiffany Heah, late 20s, Kuala Lumpur
"Depends on when a young person matures. Some can start at 18 or in their early 20s but some should stay home even when they are 50."

Meng Yean, 19, PJ
"When they are mature enough, earn their own living and can fend for their parents too. And better still, after they get married. I’ll say the ideal age is around 27!"

Chu May, 20
"When they have a full time job, are able to support themselves financially while being able to partially support their parents. When they are ready to take on life as an adult. I'd say about 23 years old?"

Amaya Lim, 16, Selangor
"No particular age. If one can think and act like an adult without frequent irrational thoughts and be independent on their own, I don't see why they can't leave home at that age when they have matured."V
