JASON Derülo can really work a room. A crowd of a few hundred fans attended his first live showcase in Dragonfly Club, Kuala Lumpur, last week got a taste of it first hand.
The 20-year-old singer, songwriter and dancer took the club by storm with his four dancers in his 45-minute show, never skipping a beat as he sang, grooved and even breakdanced his way through nine songs.
Clad in black jeans, a studded leather vest and a black singlet, Jason began the night with the dance-fuelled The Sky’s The Limit.
After asking the “singles” in the audience to put up their hands (which appeared to be just about everyone) and declaring “I’m single too”, he burst into his hit song Riding Solo, a song about doing things for yourself and not leaning on anyone’s shoulders.
This was followed by a “fan moment”; Jason picked a young girl from the audience, sat her down on a stool on stage and proceeded to serenade her with What If.

Before stepping off stage for a short breather he broke into Justin Timberlake’s SexyBack, thrilling the crowd with his skillful dance moves.
Once the chants and screams for more grew to an ear-splitting pitch he returned to the stage, asking the crowd, “If you knew that love was real, would you give it one last shot?”
At the cries of “Yes!” from the crowd Jason then brought the house down with Watcha Say, his most well-known single to date.
Whether it was a fault of the sound system in the club, the overwhelming background music or the hysterical screams from the crowd blocking out his voice, it’s a shame Jason vocals were mostly drowned out throughout the show.
For a few brief moments it almost looked like his dancers were stealing the show, being ever-present on stage, their charisma almost matching his with their cheeky smiles and animated facial expressions.
At one point even his shirt threatened to run away with the limelight, as he ripped it off and threw it into the audience for frenzied fans to fight over.
For someone who, during a press conference that same morning, claimed he tries not to be “overly sexual”, Jason sure channels a lot of heat on stage.
It was during inter-song pauses and the rare moment when the voices of the crowd died down that he really got the chance to work his vocals; however these were few and far between.
Thankfully, towards the end of the show the singer stepped up and sang his heart out through Love Hangover, and made the crowd really feel the words of his song.

In My Head closed the show and Jason bowed out in true popstar style by thanking his audience and disappearing. He did come back a little later, to sign CDs for fans, a nice gesture on his part.
Guess when he said, at the same press conference, “I want to be that person that people can turn to, that can change their whole day when their favourite song comes on the radio,” he kind of meant it. Many fans went home with a radiant glow and a smile on their faces.
