MALAYSIA held its very first official YouTuber event, OMG Live, at The Actors Studio, Kuala Lumpur last Sunday.
OMG, which stands for On Malaysian Grounds, featured the five most prominent players on the Malaysian YouTube scene – JinnyBoyTV, Germani Productions, Dan Khoo Productions, The Ming Thing and Grim Film.
In addition to the YouTubers making fun of themselves (and each other), several performers were also on hand to entertain the crowd with their music.
The free event, supported by local music/arts website WAMM (We Are Malaysian Made), attracted approximately 300 fans.
Fans were already giggling and bursting with excitement while waiting for the doors to open, singing and dancing along to JinnyBoyTV’s latest video, Oppa KL Style.
OMG Live kicked off with an introduction from WAMM founder Michael Chen, followed by the screening of an OMG Live trailer which acted as an introduction to the two hosts, Joseph Germani of Germani Productions and Ho Ming Han from The Ming Thing.
As the video ended, the two jumped on stage and continued from where the trailer ended, which was a cool touch.
There was a performance by local band Once Upon A Time There Was A Sausage Named Bob (yup, that’s their full band name), for which Grim Film’s Jared Lee plays the guitar. They played Cupid’s Fall, which was featured in the Grim Film short film Long Distance Relationship.
The event also saw the screening of several new videos from the YouTubers. Grim Film premiered Sincerely, The End, a short film starring Marianne Tan, who is slowly making a name for herself as a “YouTube actress” having also appeared on The Ming Thing’s Alone, Forever and JinnyBoyTV’s Unfold.
Germani, The Ming Thing and DanKhoo Productions all showed new videos as well (which we totally feel you should go check out on YouTube right now).
There were also performances by Skyward, an acoustic YouTube trio formed by Ming Han, Ming Yue Ho and Charis Ow; top Malaysian beatboxer Shawn Lee and up-and-coming electro-pop star Darren Ashley.
The most exciting part of the event was probably when JinnyBoyTV’s Jin Lim and Reuben Kang, the makers of viral hit My Generasi, took to the stage to present two projects they’re currently working on.
They also announced that their sequel to the Unfold love story will be filmed in Australia. Can’t wait to see what the new video has in store, and there’s nothing to do but be patient till they release it.
