HERE’S what the winners at Cheer 2013 had to say after the competition.
All-Girls division
Champions
Cyrens from SM Sri Kuala Lumpur, Selangor
“Cyrens was under a lot of pressure and so it’s amazing to win again especially after watching our competitors performing much harder stunts.” – Captain Ong Wei Lee, 16
First runners-up
Calyx All-Girls from SM(J)K Katholik, Selangor
“Although we are slightly disappointed we didn’t manage to become champions, we’re still extremely happy to place second this year!” – Captain Lim Yee Thong, 16.
Second runners-up
Dynamitez from SMK Damansara Jaya, Selangor
“I didn’t expect to place third. When one of our stunts fell, I was heartbroken. I’m proud of each and every one of my girls for staying true to our tagline ‘Together We Unite’. We’ve worked so hard for the past nine months and our hard work has finally paid off.” – Captain Chuah Hui Hua, 17.
Co-ed division
Champions
Mickeymitez from SMK Damansara Jaya, Selangor
“The 10 months of training paid off! Although we’ve had our share of setbacks, I can never ask for a better team. I’m so proud of Mickeymitez!” – Captain Edrie Azriff, 17.
First runners-up
Zelts from Seri Emas International School, Selangor
“It’s a real surprise! This is our first time competing at Cheer, so we didn’t expect to get this far.“ – Captain Chelsia Ng, 16.
Second runners-up
Vulcanz Co-Ed from SMK Seafield, Selangor
“I’m quite satisfied with the results as we are a fairly new team with only two years of experience in Cheer. Even then, half of the team are newbies so placing third is an incredible achievement.” – Captain Muhammad Danial Syafiq Azman, 17.
All-Girls junior division
Champions
Rayvens from SM Sri Kuala Lumpur, Selangor
“I wouldn’t say it was expected but there was a certain level of confidence after what we’ve been through. If it wasn’t for our teamwork, effort and positive attitude, we wouldn’t be able to achieve this.” – Captain Quek Ning Zhen, 16.
First runners-up
Anchorz from SMK Seri Bintang Selatan, KL
“This is the first time after 10 years that we have won in Cheer so it definitely feels great! But of course, I know that we can still do a lot better.” – Captain Tion Kai Xin, 16
Second runners-up
Vibrant from SMK Puteri Titiwangsa, KL
“We’re so excited to have placed third this year as we had only aimed to be in the top five. I’m extremely proud of my team. Our performances went really well!” – Captain Lee Ivy, 16.
Silkygirl Best make-up award
Champions
Blitzerz from SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (4), Selangor
“I’m really happy we won! Our peacock feather design was inspired by Katy Perry’s Peacock (a song in their routine). But we had to compromise on the design as the intricate details were too time consuming.” – Captain Melissa Kuek, 16.
First runners-up
Calyx All-Girls from SM(J)K Katholik, Selangor
“Our make-up represents the wildness and fierceness of our team and we’re glad to win this award! This is for team Calyx!” – Captain Lim Yee Thong, 16
Second runners-up
Panthers from SMK Assunta, Selangor
“We wanted to include elements of our identity in our make-up. Panthers, to us, is actually a combination of the leopard and cheetah which is why we used the animal spots to make us pop. But we were more focused on our routine so it was quite a surprise to win.” – Captain Tan Jo Lynn, 17
Silkygirl Best dressed award
Vibrant from SMK Puteri Titiwangsa, KL
“We must thank our senior who designed our costume. The batik patterns definitely helped us stand out from the crowd!” – Captain Lee Ivy, 16
MARIGOLD HL Low Fat Milk Best supporter award
SM Sri Kuala Lumpur Cyrens and Rayvens Supporters (SCARS)
“I’m so grateful for the wonderfully spirited people in Sri KL who have cooperated with SCARS. We put in a lot of effort and I’m happy to see that we’ve won again this year.” – Captain of SCARS, Crystal Lee, 17
MARIGOLD HL Low Fat Milk Teacher of the Year award
Noraini Harun, teacher advisor of Pirates from SMK Cochrane, KL
“I really didn’t expect this. It’s a bittersweet memory that I will remember forever as I finally part ways with SMK Cochrane (to join a new school). I’d like to thank all of you, especially my dear friend, Miss Shiveh for this award. My sacrifices have truly paid off.” – Noraini Harun, 33
MARIGOLD HL Milk Best showmanship award
Anselm from SMK Infant Jesus Convent, Malacca
“It’s a pleasant surprise for all of us. Our team only got to train for less than a month. Even then, I’d remind them to always be optimistic and never give up – even if you fall, just smile. And I think that’s what we did in spite of a few unstable stunts.” – Captain Ng Shin Ying, 17
