Yes, my name is prominently featured on Soccernet… as part of my question to the Ask Norman column! =P
Okay, so it wasn’t prominent, or anything to shout about, but I’m easily amused… And Soccernet is my favourite football site. Though they should really change their name to Footballnet.
Anyway, a couple of months ago, I emailed a question to Norman Hubbard, Soccernet’s “resident football anorak” who answers all sorts of football trivia questions with his rather freaky amount of knowledge on the beautiful game.
I asked him:
Has there’s been a record for the number of left-footers played in a single game by a top-flight team, or has there been a team with eleven left-footers?
– This was after Chelsea played Manchester City with SIX left-footers – Florent Malouda, Ashley Cole, Petr Cech, Yuri Zhirkov, Daniel Sturridge and Josh McEachran.
And he picked my question as the top question for the week! Yay!
It took him about a month, though… I guess it was a tough one to research. They can’t really have official records on that since some players like Morten Gamst Pedersen and the retired Pavel Nedved are two-footed.
In the end, he couldn’t find any teams that have fielded more than six lefties in a game, though he did find three teams that matched that number – Liverpool, Middlesborough and Ipswich have all fielded six left-footed players in a single game. As much as I’m sure he tried, for that agonising month I waited for my name to finally appear on my favourite football website, he couldn’t find a team that had seven.
I do have a small bone to pick with Norman’s answer though. He said Ashley Young is right-footed, but mainly uses his left.
I’ve never really seen Ashley Young use his left foot. In fact, I’ve always thought he’s one of those players that tries a little too hard to get the ball on to his right. Is it just me? Or is Norman right? He IS most of the time…
Anyway, here’s the link to my Soccernet mention =P
