I recently broke the 100 applications mark on my iPhone, which is a real feat considering I only download free apps.

Yes, I am a very cheap guy. I’ve only forced myself to pay for TWO applications before, and they both cost a meagre US$0.99 each.

So for those of you just like me who aren’t willing to dish out the cash for some applications, here are some of the best, most useful freebies I’ve found on the App Store:

1. Tower Madness Zero

Tower Madness Zero

Tower Madness Zero

This addictive tower defense strategy game has a paid version and a free version. The best thing about it is that the free version is exactly like the paid version, only with unobtrusive advertisements. You can even download additional maps/levels for free.

2. Stanza

Reading books on the iPhone might seem like a bad idea to some, but so far, I haven’t had a problem with Stanza. Better still, there’s a huge selection of public domain books you can download for free. You can have the works of writers like Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde and of course, William Shakespeare on your iPhone without paying anything at all.

3. Waze

Most GPS applications on the App Store are pretty expensive, but Waze is here to change all that. It’s a user-generated GPS application, which means the users themselves map out roads as they’re driving, allowing others using Waze to view those roads thereafter.

Malaysian roads haven’t really been mapped out yet, but if a large enough number of people get started now, it could basically become a free GPS app for everyone.

4. Photoshop.com Mobile

This app is from Adobe, so you know it’ll be that much better than most of those other photo editing apps on the Store. Not only do you get to alter and add some pretty cool effects to your photos, you also get to upload them to a personal online library.

5. iWoopie

If you want to share some cool YouTube videos with somes friends without having to wait for it to load, iWoopie is the app for you. It allows you to download videos from YouTube to your iPhone, where you can view it again any time.

6. Fring

This instant messaging service allows you to chat on MSN Messenger, Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger, Skype, Twitter and even ICQ, all in one application.

7. Documents Free

Probably the most useful app to me so far, and I believe it could be really useful to students as well. This free version allows you to create word and spreadsheet documents, and sync them with Google Docs.

So if you’re working on an assignment, you can save it in Google Docs, open it through your iPhone and work on it from anywhere at all.
