Before she landed a part in the musical In Perfect Harmony – A Malaysian Musical Journey, Anne Azureen wasn’t really a fan of “old music”.
“I used to complain when my parents turned to a radio station that played old music, and I would ask them to change the station,” says Anne, 15.
“I wasn’t familiar with most of the songs, but now I’ve actually started to like the Bee Gees, they’re great,” she adds.
Unlike Anne, 16-year-old cast member Ashley Chan has always loved listening to old music, and jumped at the chance to be a part of the musical, which will take audiences on a musical journey from the 1970s to the present.
“I love old music,” says Ashley, who recently appeared in the Short + Sweet theatre festival.
“I grew up listening to music from The Hollies and Abba. As for music from this millennium, I like Lady Gaga.”
The two youngest stars of In Perfect Harmony have been at rehearsals three hours on weeknights, and up to six hours on weekends, almost every day in the past few months. Set in a radio station, the musical which opens tomorrow, will feature hit songs from the past 40 years from The Beatles and Tan Sri P. Ramlee to Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga. There are even some Bollywood numbers and Chinese songs in the mix.
The girls are looking forward to putting their dancing, singing and acting skills to the test in their first stage musical, as they have both faced and overcome several challenges.
“I’m not a very good dancer, so it was tough at first to master the steps, and also switch between different routines,” says Anne.
For Ashley, it was the acting that worried her. “Playing several different roles between dancing and singing is challenging, but I’m enjoying myself very much.”
In Perfect Harmony – A Malaysian Musical Journey is presented by The Star in collaboration with Dama Orchestra, with SP Setia Bhd Group as the gold sponsor and UOB as the official bank.
