COSPLAY, video games, lightsaber fights, awesome freebies and prizes were aplenty at last weekend’s The Star Online Carnivale held at Tropicana City Mall in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

R.AGE joined the three days of fun and excitement with a booth and some activities of our own, including a dodgeball demonstration and mini tournament organised by the Malaysian Association of Dodgeball (MAD).

R.AGE and Mad About Dodgeball (MAD) put together a dodgeball demonstration and mini tournament at the Star Online Carnivale last weekend.

The crowd was jubilant on Sunday when the R.AGE team (represented by Ian Yee, Sharmila Nair and Edwin Lim) decided to challenge Red FM DJ Mynn Lee and friends for a (not-too-friendly) dodgeball match.

It was a heated match between the two teams and R.AGE kicked the Red FM team’s behind by winning two out of three rounds!

Later in the afternoon, a total of nine teams participated in the Mini Dodgeball Tournament to show off their athletic skills. Prizes were given out to the top three winners courtesy of Nusantara Edaran Filem, Universal Music and Diva Universal.

There were also two cosplay competitions held at the three-day carnival. The first one, held on Saturday, was presented by R.AGE and eCentral (the entertainment portal of The Star) and featured participants dressed in their favourite anime/manga character. The winners won exciting prizes including an HTC Sensation smartphone, a Contata beverage machine from The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Malaysia (CBTL) and a hamper from The Body Shop.

On Sunday, the TechCentral Games Cosplay contest took place and saw a bunch of participants dressed up as their favourite fictional characters (CSI Miami’s Horatio Caine made an appearance as well!). The prize list included a Panasonic digital camera, an HTC Sensation smartphone and a Kaldi beverage machine from CBTL.

R.AGE’s very own Cards & Boards columnist Chee Yih Yang joined in the fun by setting up his own demo booth on Saturday and Sunday, playing a set of Blood Bowl: Team Manager with curious passers-by and friends who came to the event.

Twitter also played an important role during the event, as R.AGE followers were asked to join in the Live Tweet Commentary contest. The best “coverage” was made by @amuyo_tomoko (Agnes Teh), who won herself an HTC sensation!

Carnival-goers also got the chance to toy around with Nerf guns of various sizes and bring out their inner sharp-shooter skills by trying to hit as many targets as possible in the Nerf booth. Some even went on stage to take part in the Nerf gun shooting competition on Sunday, organised by Outpost Events.

Visitors to the carnival were treated to an impressive lightsaber battle performance from the FightSaberMY group, made up of a bunch of Star Wars enthusiasts who regularly perform at events.

The crowd was amazed by the fascinating lightsaber duels, some of which mimicked the exact choreography from the movies.

For Twilight fans, the highlight of the carnival was definitely the movie ticket giveaway for the premiere of Breaking Dawn: Part 1, and the Twilight trivia, where winners receive cool merchandise from Nusantara Edaran Filem.

Apart from contests and games, The Star Online Carnivale also treated visitors to yummy food like muffins and cookies from the Malysian Institute of Baking and drinks from CBTL and Minute Maid Pulpy.

The Malaysian Institute of Baking (MIB) also set up a stall at the Star Online Carnivale last wekeend.
