Muhammad Danial Syafiq Azman, 17
Team Vulcanz Co-Ed, SMK Seafield, Selangor

LAST year was a big one for Danial Syafiq. On his first day in SMK Seafield, he decided to sign up for cheerleading, an entirely new sport for him. Later on, he was elected as captain of the school’s new team, Vulcanz Co-Ed, who would compete in Cheer’s brand new co-ed division. This year, a more experienced Danial is looking forward to going all the way to the top at Cheer 2013.

How did you start off cheerleading?
It was really just a leap of faith. When I was signing up for co-curricular activities in my new school, cheerleading stood outto me. I did not know much about it, but I thought “why not?”. I attended practice on that very day.

Best moment in Cheer?
My team, Vulcanz Co-Ed placed third in the co-ed division last year. We were a new team facing a list of experienced competitors, so it felt great to do so well.

What is it like as a male cheerleader in school?
The guys who join cheerleading in my school do it out of interest, but some people just don’t get it. They tend to think that guys who cheer aren’t “tough”, if you know what I mean. Others also say guys join cheerleading only because the girls are hot.

Are there any misconceptions about cheerleading that you would like to clear up?
Cheerleading does not only involve girls in miniskirts and pom-poms. The type of cheerleading that we are doing isn’t all fun and games. It is a real active sport that requires strength, stamina and discipline.

What goes on in your head just moments before you perform?
“Don’t screw up” *laugh*

Is there a cheerleader that you look up to?
My coach, Lim Chee Wei, who has really helped me grow as a person and a cheerleader.
