Fame and stardom comes with a price – and some celebrities, like Alexa Ray Joel chose suicide as the easy way out.
I have a confession…
I am guilty of calling Alexa Ray Joel fug as fug can be. Yes, I was shallow and mean-spirited and thought I could get away with it since I didn’t say it out loud to her face.
Then last week, something happened – Alexa reportedly tried to commit suicide.
The first thing that came to my mind was that she couldn’t take the mean and hurtful comparisons to her 80s supermodel mother Christie Brinkley anymore.
This may sound very cruel but honestly, I think that Alexa looks more like her father, Billy Joel, dressed in drag than her stunning mother. There, I said it.
I know, I just ruined any chances of going to Heaven and oh, feel free to judge me as I had judged others based on their appearance.
Recently, celebrity blogger Perez Hilton claimed that Alexa’s attempted suicide was due to a recent breakup to her musician boyfriend and also because she couldn’t deal with fighting with her mother anymore.
Phew, so it was not because I called her unattractive. Gosh, I’m kidding, but before you get any angrier, I know that suicide is not something to be made fun of nor taken lightly.
Many celebrities have attempted suicide, and unfortunately some like Kurt Cobain, succeded.
Even disc jockey DJ AM (Adam Goldstein) and actor Heath Ledger’s deaths by overdose on prescription medication indicated suicide, though we will never know for sure.
Did you know that Alexa’s father also tried to take his own life back in the 70s? Last year, he told Details magazine that he drank furniture polish in an effort to end his life, and in his biography Billy Joel: The Life and Times of a Young Man, it was stated that the suicide attempt was caused by his secret affair with his drummer’s wife.
Guess who got him admitted to a psychiatric ward and helped him seek help? The very drummer whose wife Billy was sleeping with!
Another celebrity whose suicide bid shocked Tinseltown was Owen Wilson, the shaggy maned actor famous for his Shanghai Knights and Rushmore roles.
Owen string of successful comedy roles didn’t stop the actor from slitting his wrist in 2007, which some say was compelled by his breakup to actress Kate Hudson. The couple briefly reconciled and the actor is yet to publicly address his suicide scare.
In that same year, actress Halle Berry revealed to Parade magazine that she tried to gas herself when her marriage to her first husband collapsed.
In that interview, Halle said, “I was sitting in my car, and I knew the gas was coming when I had an image of my mother finding me.”
“She sacrificed so much for her children, and to end my life would be an incredibly selfish thing to do. It was all about a relationship. My sense of worth was so low,” said Halle. “I promised myself I would never be a coward again.”
All these just goes to show that washboard-abs, huge mansions, perfect hair, and fame and fortune doesn’t make a celebrity any less vulnerable than the rest of us.
They too have fear and insecurities, and sometimes resolve to end their problems by taking the easy way out.
Fortunately for Alexa, Owen and Halle, they got another chance in life, but the same cannot be said for other celebrities who tried suicide and succeeded.
The least we as readers and fans could do is not push them towards making the worst decision of their lives, adding their names to the long list of celebrities we have already lost.
Sharm says: Okay, I’ve totally repented and have learned my lesson. Alexa Ray Joel, you’re not fug…Donatella Versace is.
