On a Sunday morning when most of us would have just remained under the sheets for a few extra hours, thousands of energetic young people flooded the Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall, Petaling Jaya on Malaysia Day to support Youth Jam.

The concept of Youth Jam is to merge technology, creative arts and entrepreneurship in a single carnival-like event. The activities included workshops, talks, games and a mini concert.

Youth Jam 2012 director Jazz Tan Yee Mei said: “We just provided the platform, and the young people did everything else.” The idea of the event was, after all, about doing something for the youth, by the youth.

Designed to go on tour this year, Youth Jam kicked-off in Penang and moved on to Perak before it finally reached the Klang Valley last weekend.

One activity which drew a lot of attention was the Sony National Kpop Showdown. The Kpop-themed dance competition saw many college/university groups taking part to show off their skills. In the end, a group called Progression emerged as champions.

Apart from the dance crews, plenty of cosplayers showed up for the anime cosplay competition.

Local YouTube celebrities Jin Lim and Reuben Kang of JinnyBoyTV also made an appearance to support the event.

During a chat with the BRATs, Lim’s passion for producing the videos that have become JinnyBoyTV’s trademark was evident.

“There is never a bad video. Every one of them is just different,” said the YouTuber

International violinist Dennis Lau was also there, and he said he believes young people should have faith in originality because that is the only aspect that makes one different from another.
