WHEN fashion blogger Amanda Liu first started blogging in 2007, it was mainly to rant about her daily life. But things started to change when she entered college.
Since everyone at her campus always seemed so well-dressed, Liu started to pay more attention to her personal style. She posted pictures of her outfits on her blog (sugarplumcandyfloss.blogspot.com), drawing inspiration from popular fashion blogs and magazines.
Little did she know, her outfits drew so much attention on the blog that she would eventually be featured in a Singaporean fashion magazine, as well as other online fashion websites like Tongue In Chic and Lipstiq.
Photos of her outfits uploaded to LookBook (a website that compiles “outfit of the day” shots from around the world) have even made it to the site’s feature page several times.
“When I received my first email from a fan, I was stunned, and extremely happy,” said 21-year-old Liu, who now has quite a following online. “Most of the followers on my blog come from LookBook, and one of them actually helped me get featured in that magazine in Singapore.”
These days, Liu is usually busy juggling between her studies and blogging. “It’s school during the day, and events at night; but I always make sure I put school first.”
Liu had initially hoped to either study a fashion-related course, or be an air stewardess. But because her parents weren’t keen on those ideas, she took up mass communications instead. Now, she hopes to pursue a career in fashion marketing when she graduates.
“When I start work, I know I will have very little time for anything else, but I will always make time for blogging. It has always been my passion,” she said.
