… in both ways. When the Michael Jackson statue is unveiled at Fulham’s Craven Cottage this Sunday, Fulham fans will seriously think it’s bad, but I think it’s gonna be like, BAD.
While the match itself, Fulham vs. Blackpool, will be far from a Thriller (yes, I just said that), you gotta admit, Michael Jackson meets the Premier League – it doesn’t get any better than that.
The statue is meant to be a tribute to MJ, a close friend of Fulham chairman Mohamed Al-Fayed who attended a match at Craven Cottage once way back in 1999. Remember the time?
There’s already talk that some Fulham players, namely MJ fans Bobby Zamora and Clint Dempsey, plan to celebrate any goals with a Moonwalk. I wonder if the FA will mind if there was some crotch-grabbing…
And if you believe the DailyMail, the rest of the team was ORDERED to do the dance as well. I’m guessing they were told “Don’t stop till you get enough…” I can drop these song titles all day long…
Blackpool players are said to also be lining their own MJ tribute – they’ll be doing the zombie dance from Thriller if they score. It would be a real bummer if neither side scored though… Fingers crossed, it’ll be a six-goal thriller and they’ll have to do every dance from Smooth Criminal to Beat It.
It might be fun for us, but I know Fulham fans probably won’t be too happy with the statue. But given that Al-Fayed has played such a huge role in securing the club’s top-flight status, having invested a purported 200 million pounds in the club, he’s likely to be forgiven this little oddball moment.
The statue was originally set to be unveiled outside Harrods in Knightsbridge – which used to be owned byAl-Fayed – as a tribute to the superstar when he passed away in 2009. But having since sold the up-scale departmental store, he decided to plonk it outside Craven Cottage instead.
It might all feel a bit tacky, given MJ barely had any ties with Fulham and these statues are usually reserved for club legends, but it sure makes for a more interesting weekend. And it’s Michael friggin’ Jackson! Any chance to celebrate his life and music is good if you asked me…
Tell us what you think!
