Our friends over at StarMetro have been doing a great job pushing for the preservation of the century-old buildings in the Jalan Sultan area, Kuala Lumpur.

Not only has their Preserve Our Heritage campaign played its part in reversing the government’s decision to demolish the Jalan Sultan shophouses for the MRT public transport system, it will now promote the historic area as a heritage site.

Jalan Sultan, back in the day.

And we’re pretty sure we don’t have to say any more about why it’s important to preserve these buildings (duh!). But in case you don’t know, click here to read about why these “old” buildings are important to our culture, heritage and identity as a nation.

Playing our part

Anyway, we’ve decided to do our bit to help out too.

While StarMetro will be organising a mural painting featuring over 50 artists at Jalan Sultan this Saturday (Oct 15), R.AGE will be doing our own thang – a PHOTOWALK.

If photography, or nice historic buildings, is your thing, send your details (full name, MyKad and phone numbers) to alltherage@thestar.com.my. We only have 15 slots available, so send in that e-mail fast!

The photowalk is open to everyone aged 15 to 29, and is free of charge. However, you do need to make your own way to the destination (we’ll confirm time and meet-up point by Friday) and of course, you’ll need to bring your own camera (or cameras), too.

KL City has sure come a long way - and people should be reminded of that journey.

Also, we’ll be publishing some of your best shots from the photowalk in next week’s R.AGE and on our Facebook/Twitter accounts, so people will get to see what you guys did – how beautiful our capital city’s historic quarter is.

So this Saturday, it’ll be Photography meets Heritage. What more do you want?

Even if you’re not a shutterbug, you can just tag along for the guided tour – to learn all about the history of the area – or check out the large mural painting.

Whatever it is, just be there if you can. We’ll need all the support we can get. Like the video below says – if we lose our past, we lose our future.

Tell us what you think!
