PHEW, the wait is finally over. We now know who the new American Idol judges are
— Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and singer/actress Jennifer Lopez.
Wow, an ageing rockstar and a singer/actress who has not had a hit album or movie in the last couple of years… great choices to replace Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi (who some still claim was actually fired from the show), don’t you think?
I know that it’s totally unfair to judge the judges before even seeing them in action but seriously, Jennifer Lopez? And Steven Tyler?
As a singer, Jennifer has sold more than 55 million albums worldwide while Aerosmith, which has been around since the 1970s and is known for hits like Walk This Way, Janie’s Got A Gun and Don’t Wanna Close My Eyes, has sold over 100 million records.
But the question on everyone’s thoughts remains — will the duo make good enough judges for the 10th season of American Idol?
I, for one, am not too sure about that.
Why couldn’t they have booked someone with more credibility, albeit with questionable fashion sense, like Elton John?
The gap-toothed performer has been out of the limelight for quite sometime and it would’ve been a great comeback ”act” for him and the show as well. Not that he needs the money, though.
The singer is known for his sharp tongue, and huge musical talent, and it would’ve been great to see another side of English wit on that show.
Another Brit who would’ve added a lot of colour (but probably not personality) to the show is Victoria Beckham.
Don’t be shocked. Just because Victoria is unable to carry a tune in a bucket doesn’t mean she cannot recognise talent when she sees it.
If you remember her guest judge stint on American Idol earlier this year, Victoria had a knack for spotting contestants with the whole package — voice, looks, character and fashion sense to boot. Those are what an American Idol should have, right?
Victoria was not shy about giving constructive criticism and praises, too, when they mattered. Oh, and she also had a great sense of humour, dry as it was.
Simon, the original British judge on the talent show decided not to stay on after nine seasons of belittling contestants, ordering talentless auditioners to leave and gaining the name as American Idol’s resident ”bad cop”.
He thinks that it is a better idea to judge the American version of his reality-based talent show The X-Factor. The programme is scheduled to begin next year.
To be fair, Simon was often the only reason people tuned in to watch American Idol, a show that over the years produced talents like Kelly Clarkson, Katharine McPhee, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry and Adam Lambert.
Meanwhile, Ellen’s departure also came as a shock to many. Though it was only her first year on the show, the funnywoman decided that she did not have what it takes to be straightforward and honest to hopeful contestants who were trying to break into the entertainment industry.
So, she bailed.
When the world thought that the show is stuck for the worse with Randy Jackson (he’d better add a few more intelligible words to his vocabulary that currently consists of only ‘Dawg’ and ‘Yo, yo, yo!’) and Kara, news came that the latter had been unceremoniously released from her contract, one year short of her obligation.
Rumours started swirling a few months earlier that Jennifer was in talks to join Randy on the panel and soon enough, there were speculations that the mother of two was dropped out of the list after the producers were unable to cope with her diva antics and impossible demands.
If rumours are to be believed, this is not the first time that Jennifer has been accused of such behaviour. Even The Oprah Winfrey’s Show’s staff members have complained before that the celebrity was one of the most difficult personalities they had to handle on the show.
Oh no … what does that mean for the rest of the American Idol judges?
Randy has never been able to handle any of the ladies on the show and it’s highly doubtful that he’ll even get a word in now with Jennifer at the table. And what about Steven? Has anyone even heard him speak before?
Shoot, many fans are already dubbing this season as the ”Apocalypse” season in which all hell will break loose and American Idol will finally meet its death. What do you think?
Sharm says: Can’t wait to see how terrible … I mean, good … the new judges are. *fingers crossed*
