OUR cover story last week examined divorce statistics among young people, as reports show that more people below the age of 29 are getting divorced.
We spoke to several young people who, despite the odds being against them, still believe in the institution of marriage.
We asked readers for their take on marriage and divorce:
@khumaini85 lack of cooperation and commitment from both side. The spark before & after marriage also difference.
@IzIzHamHam in a way that people have become so materialistic nowadays. Thinking that it’s TOO hard to survive with what they have
@Ijati_Ahsan for me, no issues are strong enough to warrant a divorce, except cheating or abuse. anything else can be talked out.
@qills maybe they married bcause of peer pressure. then they realise its not kind of life they been dreamed of, they divorce
@qisthinarazin marriage institution undermined. some people can’t handle being committed.
@cuddyjah zero tolerance for the other person. Rushing into things could be a factor too.
@pualiping People are more attached to their gadgets more than spouses! E.g. iPhone, iPad etc.
@Noeinism it has turned into either “til debt do us part” or “til doubt do us part”
@chienteng A lot of times parents pressure their children to get married quick, and they end up rushing into it without being ready.
>> Later, we asked them whether they thought people should have a plan before deciding to get married, or whether they should take the plunge because they are in love. We had some pretty mixed responses:
@joonsunn Must plan. Nothing’s worse than having a kid die of hunger coz daddy can’t buy milk.
@horsewhips definitely more practical and realistic even to plan and wait till life gets somewhat stable.
@Ashurah209 no specific age. as long as the couples have good financial stability. Love alone is never enough to survive in a marriage.
@LyanaSulaiman Of cos it has a age. Early age marriage will lead to pure immatuarity and fights.Old age marriage may lead to health disorder.
@cerraazizi I STRONGLY believe that u need a proper plan before u get married. Not just financial plans, but oso how to communicate well esp during tensed situations. If couples don’t plan on how they’re supposed to
@rxannelow Sure thing. Planning is the only way to prevent going through financial crisis especially when kids are added to the picture.
@cuddyjah BOTH. & the right age is probably after you’ve graduated university. But no harm in getting married earlier if you have $$$ 😛
@UntoldHero crazy love leads to an unplanned future , there should be a right age limit for them to be held responsible
@th3b0r3dshA to be safe one must plan for their marriage ….its a hard decision, though 🙂
@MubarackMamza no right age for marriage or even love~ when da time comes,it juz happens~ 😀
Tell us what you think!
