Last weekend, some the country’s best singing talents converged at the 24th Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL).
They dazzled with their singing prowess onstage, but sadly, where fashion is concerned, the stars fizzled out, rather than shine.
Worldwide, celebrities make the most of red carpet events — donning designer wear and glittery jewels — so that they’ll look perfect on awards night as the photographers will be out in full force to capture them in all their splendour.
Alas, in Malaysia, most young celebrities just couldn’t be asked to glam up. Only a handful seemed to put any effort into their appearance. Check out the following red carpet AJL hits and misses.
Awal Ashaari, TV host
Clearly Awal made some effort here — the military-style jacket, which quite a number of artistes also wore that night, is very current and he didn’t attempt to overdo the outfit by wearing another stand-out piece.
Juliana Evans, actress
Good on her for bringing out the caged heels! But what’s going on with the rest of the outfit? The colours stand out but she doesn’t look like she’s dressed for an important event, instead you’d half expect to see her at a night club sporting that outfit and working the podium!
Puteri Sarah, singer
Great outfit, but it is not for the red carpet. Tights, T-shirts and hairbands are so … college! Even though she tried to add some pizzazz to her outfit with those pink heels, clearly she’s not feeling the ”awards” buzz.
Betty Banafe, actress
It’s ”A” for effort here but ”C-” for presentation. This dress is just … weird. It’s great that Betty chose to stand out with red and fix a pretty hairpiece on her head, but the whole look is just too much!
Intan Ladyana, actress
This tiered dress is lovely and well paired with the gladiator heels. However, it would have worked better as a tube dress; those sleeves are just awkward.
Fara Fauzana, actress
Sigh. Clothing is one thing, presentation is another. If you’re going to not dress up at all, and instead look frumpy, at least learn to pose like a celebrity. She looks like just any random girl who got lost and ended up on the red carpet while on her way from the market.
Amy, singer
Now here’s a rocker who knows how to work it, on and off stage. The white suit and shoes go great with the hat and printed scarf, but his arm candy could use a little work!
Fizo, model
I’m not a fan of metallic material on men, but this is not too bad. The thing is, he could dress like this anywhere. The red carpet is a place to shine, to wear something that stands out, to show the world just how stylish you can be.
Couple his good looks and youth with a nice suit, and you’d have a Malaysian Edward Pattinson gracing the awards show and having girls swoon over him.
