Warning signs of a potential abuser:
– Constant put downs
– Criticises your appearance, choices you make, family, friends, etc.
– Using guilt
– You are often made to feel guilty over something, thus having to give in to his demands constantly.
Possessiveness
Checks your telephone calls, reads your text messages, insists on access to your e-mail account and social network sites (Facebook, Twitter, etc). Stalks you and calls to check on your whereabouts.
Explosive temper
Breaks things, raises his/her voice and maybe even hit you.
Impose authority
Tells you what to do and forces you to seek approval before you do something or go somewhere. Takes away your right to make decisions for yourself.
Isolating you
Removes you from your circle of family and friends. Always gets upset when you choose your family and friends over him.
Threats
Says things like, “I’ll break your neck,” or “I’ll kill you,” then dismisses them with “Everybody talks that way,” or “I didn’t really mean it.”
