Sabrena’s blogpost

Hi. My name is Sabrena. I’m 23, from Penang but living the KL life. Food is ultimately love. And like love, it should be accessible to everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re a tired new mum looking to cook something family-friendly or a broke 20-something trying to make something decent when you’re far from home. Cooking should be easy and hassle-free especially when you don’t have the time or money to buy a really, amazing steak. That’s why I made my easy aglio olio video (that’s a lil too long, but simple enough to follow). I want to make videos that mayn’t be the showiest or best edited, but get the message across with a liberal sprinkle of self-deprecating humor. It’s ok to not have the best tools in the box; it’s all about making do with what you have so that the gourmet palate can be attained bound only by the lining of your wallet.

I specifically chose aglio olio because it’s one of those dishes that allow restaurants to mark up their prices phenomenally for a flavor that’s readily available with just a few spices on hand. I’d originally planned for a cold pasta with tuna but my housemate used the last onion so what better way to show how versatile and easy cooking can be than by improvising on the spot. My mother loves aglio olio and I rely on rough measurements because a seasoning-heavy dish like this is very much up to individual taste; if it’s good to you, it’s good enough.

I hope you guys find my video helpful. At the very least now you know how to smash garlic 😀 Stay hungry, y’all!

BTW…

Ingredient of the week: Kepayang

THE kepayang “fruit” or buah keluak is actually the seed of the kepayang tree and has a rich history. Used to make nasi kebuli, a royal dish served to ancient Pahang royalty, it now has a place in Malaysian dishes like the Peranakan specialty, asam pedas keluak. Most kepayang trees are found in Pahang, but […]
