THE Cheer 2012 results all boiled down to the judges’ scoresheets over the two days teams were competing.
Clean execution of splits, jumps and each stunt counted for something, and the six judges had their work cut out for them last weekend.
Here’s what they had to say about the teams and the overall competition:
Clint Johnson
“The teams have improved greatly, in terms of stunt technique and in cheering as well. The Cyrens were able to have more difficulty and hit it cleanly. Sometimes people try things that are too difficult so it’s not as clean, they were able to combine the two and make a routine that was difficult, sturdy and fun to watch.”
Beverley Hon
“Cyrens deserved to win because they showed that they were very experienced. They’ve been practising all-year-round and have also been participating in other competitions. They have made their presence count in the cheerleading circuit and not just in Cheer.”
Melissa McKenzie
“The difference between last year’s competition and this year is huge, more teams are trying harder stunts. It’s the first time in this competition I’ve seen a girl tossing another girl with her hands, which is awesome. The standard has definitely improved.
They are progressing at a good rate, some of the top teams should even push harder. They’re at that point where they can start doing some really amazing things.”
Dian Anggraini
“It amazed me, the teams were very brave, it’s a high-pressure competition and they are all champions for having the guts to compete.
“Most of them were very excited to be here, and you can see that they were having problems managing their emotions. Maybe they should play it safer and practise more so that the emotions don’t affect their routines. But the enthusiasm of the teams was definitely very good.”
Jimmy Lin
“A lot of teams tried difficult stunts, and most of them were quite unstable. If they can’t hit the stunts, it’s better if they focus on the easier ones. If there’s not enough time to perfect them, downgrade to something simpler where they can hit it and make it nicer. Focus more on the foundations to help them achieve the more difficult stunts.”
Siow Wei Wei
“The teams improved a lot even from day one to day two, the good thing about these teams is that they had that fighting back spirit.
“Many teams didn’t complete their stunts on the first day, but they were able to fight back and show that actual cheer spirit of never giving up.”
