AWARD shows are the best. You get to see your favourite celebrities dress to the nines, do silly interviews, act cute and best of all, interact with other celebrities.
It is simply exciting to know that most, if not all, of your favourite celebrities are gathered under one roof and everytime the camera pans the crowd, you can’t help but try to see where and with whom these celebrities are seated.
Of all the award shows that are out there, I absolutely love the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs). I do. It seriously is da bomb. It has been around for 27 years and there’s really no surprise why it has withstood the test of time.
The video music awards show is so much fun to watch most probably because it’s not as pompous as the Grammy Awards nor as flashy as the European Music Awards.
The VMAs has just the right amount of fun, excitement, drama and humour, and the producers manage to get it right every single time. Well, most of the time.
I remember the time when I would be so excited just to watch MTV VMAs – as there were no repeat shows on TV back in the day (yes, I’m older than most of you guys) – and how it was the topic of discussion among friends the next day.
Although I’m older and ahem, much wiser these days, MTV VMAs still brings the same excitement to me today as it did when I was a giddy teenager with a crush on Justin Timberlake from N*Sync. He was so dreamy …
While I’m totally bummed out that I didn’t get to watch the 2011 MTV VMAs earlier this week, I still managed to read about a lot of things that happened on the show and how, as always, it was the platform for celebrity awesomeness.
Beyonce revealed that she’s pregnant with her first child and Lady Gaga performed her hit song You And I as “Jo Calderone”, her male alter-ego. They’re awesome!
Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus ditched their youths and came looking like desperate thirtysomethings. What’s new?
Britney Spears was honoured with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and Nicki Minaj showed up wearing a decorated surgical mask. Don’t ask.
Yes, the 2011 MTV VMAs was exciting and entertaining and has given us plenty to talk about until the next award show rolls around.
Well, here are just some of my favourite MTV VMAs moments over the years that still got people talking … and I don’t think they’ll stop any time soon.
The kiss
Who can forget the awesome performance by Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 MTV VMAs?
Well, we may not exactly remember the songs they performed (Like A Virgin and Hollywood, btw) but we all sure do remember the little lip-lock action that went on at the end of the performance.
Her Madgesty kissed both Britney and Christina although the latter action was not shown as the camera panned to catch Justin Timberlake’s reaction instead.
Sharm says: No one remembers that Madonna kissed Christina that day. Poor girl. It’s (always) all about Britney …
The other kiss
Yeah, most of you might not even remember, let alone know, that Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley were once married. While we’re on the topic, Lisa Marie is also the daughter of Elvis Presley – the king of rock’n’roll. What’s rock’n’roll? Never mind.
At the 1994 MTV VMAs, Michael took to the stage to announce that he and Lisa Marie were a happy couple. They also shared a “passionate kiss” in front of the uncomfortable audience.
No one bought the act.
Sharm says: It was awkward then. It still is now. RIP Michael.
The one with Kanye West
This was the year when every single award went to Taylor Swift and the world was starting to get annoyed with the country singer.
None more so than Kanye West. When Taylor won the 2009 MTV VMAs Best Female Video award, Kanye decided that enough was enough. As Taylor was about thank her fans, the rapper grabbed the microphone and proclaimed that the award should have gone to Beyonce instead.
No one looked more embarrassed than Beyonce who later gave Taylor a chance to make her acceptance speech.
Sharm says: Thanks to that incident, the world was subjected to the “Im’ma let you finish but …” speech from everyone but Kanye.
The one with the snake
Well, it really is all about Britney Spears. If you thought that she was a goody-two-shoes, innocent girl, her performance at the 2001 MTV VMAs showed otherwise. The singer decided to shed her good-girl image when she went on stage to give a very memorable performance of I’m A Slave 4 U.
Who can forget the white python around her neck and her super sexy dance moves that got everyone talking for days afterwards? Yeah, she’s not a great live performer but that girl sure knows how to put on a good show.
Sharm says: It’s Britney b****. No one can mess with her … except for herself.
